searching on www.patents.ibm.com for patents owned by amiga reveals 3 patents: 2 ancient ones for joysticks and one recent one for a bus arbitration scheme or something.
searching for patents owned by commodore returns 14 patents, for stuff ranging from cdrom error detection to case designs. escom have 4, including what looks like a patent on HAM.(hold and modify)
MacOS X has exactly this. you put an rtf text file called "credits.rtf" containing a list of credits into the application wrapper, and with a single method call you get a reasonably nice about box that displays your text in a scroller, superimposed over a macos x logo.
of course, this takes all the fun out of writing about boxes...
'apple is making the same mistake it made back in the 80's...Good luck Apple'
- wtf? have you any idea how many of these boxes they sell?
for gods sake, can't you understand that apple is not trying to sell to you? their primary markets are publishing, education and non-geek people who just want something thats fairly easy to use. there are a lot of potential customers in those categories. substantially more than in the "i enjoy recompiling the linux kernel" group.
slashdot is infested with 15 year old idiots who think they are the only people in the world.
exactly what are the patents that gateway own?
