Undoubtedly, some people would bend or break the rules of the game, either just for the joy of hacking,or in an attempt to gain skills or items in the game that are beyond their current means.
An example for this is netrek. While all calculations are server-based, hacked up clients which help the player do exist. In order to protect the game from cheaters, you have to use precompiled binaries which authenticate themselves with RSA on the server.
Of course, people have found ways around that, but more or less all serious games are played with "legal" clients.

I wrote my first Pascal programs with Turbo Pascal (I think it was 3.0) on CPM as well.
The hardware ? Commodore 720 in CPM emulation mode. That must have been around '84 back in high school.
