Mechanized Propulsion Systems has done nothing more than tinker with legos, and claim their first prototype will be an 8m tall giant walking heap of metal constructed mostly from scrap I-beams. It looks to be either an elaborate joke (which they deny in their message board) or someone's very half-baked idea to scam the feds for research funding (which they state as a goal on their front page).
The closest thing we have to mecha in our future will probably be a decendant of Asimo.
1) The cost to build one of these things would be far greater than the cost of the largest rendering farms.
2) 3D render speeds seem to be doubling at nearly _twice_ the rate of Moore's Law. A frame that takes an hour to render today, will take only 15 minutes to render in 18-24 months.
It won't be long before movies like Jurassic Park will be rendered in real time at studios... and not long after that, in our own homes. But by then studios will probably have replaced most actors (and sets) with inexpensive, high quality CGI dopplegangers, thus increasing total production time again to several years.
I'm sure Lucas Film loves these guys for inventing what ultimately is little more than a free viral marketing scheme for the StarWars franchise.
As for mention in earlier posts of Lucas possibly inventing and marketing a religion (A La Scientology), I don't think his previous testomony of Star Wars being fanciful fiction for tots would go over too well with the critics. Nor would the action figures. Think "Buddy Christ" from Dogma:)
Nothing against classic StarWars, but I'm a little burnt out after all the EP1 and now EP2 hype. Much more looking forward to LOTR.
I would be willing to give up marginal, read MARGINAL profile information to get targetted ads. And if those targetted ads suck or don't interest me, or are for services I can't buy right away, i will dump the ad service, like pronto.
If you are only willing to give up _marginal_ profile information, only expect to receive _marginally_ on target advertising. Simple logic.
The other extreme would be: "Hello Dave, I noticed you just ran out of TP. After a careful genetic analysis of your ass-tissue makeup, may I suggest switching to Squeezin' the Charmin? Some privacy? I'm sorry, Dave, I can't do that."
I'm sure you'd be willing to be the first to martyr yourself with bankrupcy in the name of the Free Software spirit.
Just because you think you're the GPL Buddah, dosen't mean that everyone wants to watch their only means of feeding their families become a penniless industry.
You're assuming it won't be mandated by the Federal Government.

A wonderful idea. Unfortunately, that puts US at risk again for harassment suits, and opens us up to all sorts of privacy rights hipocracy allegations if we were to, say, put up a database of all 'enemies of the revolution':P
Bad things need to happen to these people, but I for one am not in a position to risk my hide making those bad things happen. Maybe karma will catch up to them.
You would never have to decrypt it. One only needs to encrypt their search query to find their matching results.

Couple problems with that conspiracy theory...
1) The cost to build one of these things would be far greater than the cost of the largest rendering farms.
2) 3D render speeds seem to be doubling at nearly _twice_ the rate of Moore's Law. A frame that takes an hour to render today, will take only 15 minutes to render in 18-24 months.
Have you seen some of the GeForce3 footage??
