  1. question... on Refund for Windows action · · Score: 1

When I purchased my custom built dual p200 system a year and a half ago, I specifically said, "No operating system. Do not even format the drive."
When I powered the system up, I got the hideous '95 bootup screen, and then a DOS prompt. So '95 wasn't on there, but MSDOS 7 (or whatever it's called) was.
    So my questions are this:
    1) What sort of license does this have? It was a 'fancy' DOS 7 that had a nasty win95 bootup screen, and that's it.
    2) Why would they put that on when I specifically asked for *NO* operating system and for the drive not to even be formatted? (Note: This was a custom built system, and the HDD was out of the manufacturer's box, just like at Best Buy and places like that, which means no OS would be on there anyway)
    3) Although it's been a year and a half, and I have no proof that it was ever on there (except the friends/witnesses that saw it), what sort of $ could I get out of it? (There was no EULA, no dox for the OS they put on there, and no mention of the OS. And being M$, I can be assured that someone paid for the OS that was installed on there, and I doubt it was a freebie to me)
    Ugh. I stop rambling now.

  2. Why...? on Music Industry scores the closing of www.lyrics.ch · · Score: 1

Because these pigheaded bastards will do anything to either make a buck or make themselves look like assholes - or both. They don't even care what the consequences are.
What's next? The local smalltown no-name band getting busted at a gig because they did a cover of a song?
    It's absurd.

  3. yes! on Australian Linux user gets Windows Refund · · Score: 1

That is great! It's a good thing he DID put a lot of effort into getting a refund for software he didn't want. Hopefully this will not only prompt others to do the same, but wake up companies such as Toshiba to realize that the end user doesn't always want sucky software with a new PC.

  4. you've got to be kidding... on Furby is a national security risk · · Score: 1

First off, who in their right mind would allow toys, especially of the stuffed variety, in top secret meetings? Seems quite ridiculous to me. It's not Furby that's the problem. It's the people that allow minor disturbances (ie: Furby) rather than getting down to complete, organized, undistracted business.
    The government in action... Again...

  5. not too shocking... on Hayes is Dead · · Score: 1

It was actually bound to happen. I have only seen 3 Hayes peripherals in use in my time. 2 of them are at work. Hayes was always overpriced, which definitely proved to be their downfall.
Why pay $200 for a Hayes 33.6 when you can get a USR 33.6 that's Hayes compatible for $120? (Don't knock the prices. I haven't been 33.6 shopping in over a year)
All of my non-Hayes external modems ran flawlessly, and quite cool at that. You could prepare a 7 course dinner on the external Hayes at my place of employment.
    But nonetheless, adios, Hayes.
