    You have always been able to meta-moderate (well, at least since it was implemented). Apparently you had to opt in by clicking on it in preferences or somewhere (I forget). After that, the "Have you Meta Moderated Today?" line would appear magically each time you loaded the main page.

    From the comments that I've seen here (and on banjo when it went up for testing) everyone gets the meta-moderation line without opting in.

    Novell is far from doomed. I see NetWare servers at a majority of my large clients. For a simple, robust, worry free file/print server environment it's hard to beat.

    If you're making your decision on who to vote for while standing in the voting booth, do us all a favor and don't vote at all.

    If this is going to work, it has to be totally idiot proof. Nothing fancy at all. I do agree with the vote confirmation part. Based on my experiences with misaligned (or just sucky) touchscreens, this is a must.

    So am I to understand that these machines will be connected to the Internet? Or are they giving them physical access to the boxen? and a keyboard? Or maybe they will stumble across a remote shell by touching the screen to vote for the wrong guy a certain number of times?

    Why in the world would you even risk having something like this connected to a public network? Store everything locally and have the precinct elections commisioner call in the results, then verify them later when the machines are collected.

    I'm not trying to be rude, I'm curious. I'd be very worried about liability for things like this.

    They must have had a power outage:

    The webserver is powered by a 6 volt TRS-80 AC Adaptor (CAT NO. 26-3804). We take our web hosting very seriously at humanclock.com, therefore we have installed 4 "AA" batteries in the webserver in case of power failure. Whereas some battery backup systems last for only 20 minutes and cost hundreds of dollars, our power backup solution lasts for 20 hours and costs $2.49, (due to it being double coupon Tuesday).

    So they license the technology to people like Sun, Novell, and anyone else who wants to pay for it.

    The combination of a patent, use restrictions, and licensing fee would put it out of reach for any Free/free programs. Even if it could be clean-room reverse engineered, they could make it a moving target even more than it is now.

    I was just noticing that it broke the functionality of my mouse wheel when I ran their demo, then to my surpise IE shuts down and TextPad pops up with the following message:

    *** Fatal Curl Error! ***

    Assertion failed in c:/cygwin/scratch-auto/automated-build-temp/curl/C ore/MemoryManager/refill.c:38: !a->being_collected
    ******* Aborting! *******

    Strange behavior.

    Well, that really depends on whether we are talking about not installing the telnet daemon, or the telnet client.

    I would never install (or activate) the telnet daemon by default, but I would certainly install the telnet client on every machine I have.

    Telnet is great for all kinds of troubleshooting.

    Maybe he did it in his spare time.

    Maybe he did it for a sense of accomplishment.

    Maybe he did it and contributed it back to the keepers of the source, they implemented it, thus saving hundreds if not thousands of other people to have to go out and buy a new sound card.

    One of the places I work at is using Citrix on NT to host thin clients. The old, good for nothing workstations they where buying 8 years ago make fine Citrix clients.

    I'll admit that it isn't free, but it's worth the small investment because the custom applications that they use just aren't available for Linux. And it's cheaper than buying new hardware every year.

    Bah, no way. So you're saying that a P-III 1.13Ghz is somehow more stable than a P-III 1Ghz?

    And you're also saying that you could sit down at your box and tell the speed difference between these two chips without some sort of benchmark?

    And we're led to believe that you wouldn't mind paying the extra 75% to get the extra 130Mhz?

    Unless you've got money to burn or have a huge ego problem that you have to compensate for by buying the biggest and the best available, I doubt it.

    So if someone manages to hang onto a Mac SE for say, 125 years, you don't think that some museum would be interested?

    Everything will have value to someone if you keep it long enough (except maybe food ;).

    Heh, my keyboard isn't one of the originals, but it is pretty old and I just love the way it feels. It's still got a "WordPerfect for IBM Personal Computers" keyboard template stuck to the top of it.

    So what (normal user) mail programs are considered safe? I notice nothing was said about Pegasus, so is this the only choice?

    Personally, I either use pine or a web interface to read my mail, so I really haven't kept up with this.

    No, what's really needed is a virus that sends an email to people in the user's personal address book that carries as its payload a letter explaining to all, just exactly why they shouldn't be using Outlook.

    One installer that really bugs me is RealPlayer. There is a screen during the install where you select which "channels" you want to subscribe to or something. None of the visible options in the scrollbox are selected, so most people just go on.

    Of course the channels that they really want to push are at the bottom of the list and are checked by default, you just can't see them without scrolling down.

    That just bothers me.

    I believe the whole point was to get by with existing or very cheap hardware. They really didn't have much of a choice in what they got.

    Yes, when I was working for some school districts in Texas we where able to purchase NT for like $25. $10 more if you wanted a CD set.

    Around here if you order yours PCMCIA you get Pizza with Cheese, Mushrooms, Capers, Italian sausage, and Anchovies.
