My own personal solution to this problem is to phase out every and each program, OS and everything other that downloads upgrades without owner's intervention, and there would be a really serious need in order to leave such a program, with specific traffic shaping crafted specifically for it. You understand what I mean.
Also, when I was a sysadmin I just installed a very complicated firewall (ipfw on FreeBSD) that limited speed of every separate group of users so the bandwidth hog would affect his own group only. And the sniffer was installed so that I could see the update sources and limit them accordingly.
They should better use some other coolant that is not as toxic as ammonia so heat exchangers are not needed. I propose propylenglycol or, better, Russian Vodka. Then, all the radiator panels outside would be fully passive and require no external pumps.
I didn't hear about it but I believe it was just before Dennis Tito. The astronauts were so tired with computer problems with undocking MPLM that they even did not hold a meeting ceremony for cosmonauts arriving to the Station.
You're kidding right? You spend a gazillion dollars sending them up there and they get a day off?
Yes. We Russians are LAZY. And the first thing we do after entering our Salyut or Mir is to REST. We have no reason to speed up since there are 6 months before Soyuz warranty expires. The only big expenses are food, water and oxygen.
You Americans have a Shuttle that can be in orbit 2 weeks at most. And you do everything as troubled bees under strict supervision of Houston.
The model of actual MODEM, not a Asus RT-16 that is a router only, (my hw is D-Link DSL-504T) The version of MODEM firmware (My fw is OpenWRT Backfire) The actual DSL protocol, The distance from DSLAM and a model of cable, (1 kilometer 0.4 mm polyethylene) The cappings (speed limits set by provider) and provider's policy in this matter (586k up, 8m down, unsupportive, no way to increase) Uplink and downlink attenuation and noise margins (att 20 dB dl, 10 dB ul, margins about 20 dB)
And only with these data, it's possible to do something to improve the link.
I begin believing that our Russian authorities actively promote anti-gay feelings in order to provoke a boycott of this Raspiliada. Reasoning is simple: The less people visit it, the simpler will be to cover all the raspil-otkat (cut and kickback).
I noticed that, too. Assuming both 5Ghz and 2.4 Ghz radios at 450mbit each, you have 900 mbit per AP, X 2000, so 1.8 Tbit.
Have you assumed that radio waves are not TRANSVERSAL? Your 450 mbit are marketing and PR feces bovi. The nominal speed of 802.11n in 20 MHz band is 75 mbit/s. It's doubled when you use 40 MHz band and doubled once more when you use MIMO 2x2. But there are only 2 orthogonal polarizations, say, vertical and horizontal, so MIMO 3x3 will not give you anything valuable, except, may be, ability to use vertical polarization omni and 2 separate horizontals for all sides.
Then, remember that a normal cellular GSM structure uses 7 cells and 7 frequencies, and WiFi has only 4 distinct 2.4 GHz channels. But laws of physics are the same. You cannot use 5 GHz everywhere since universal clients are rare. So you cannot use 40 MHz and you get 150 mbit/s only. And the last nail to the coffin: Your US equipment brought here is legally prohibited by US authorities to use channels 12 and 13, and this prohibition is burnt to EEPROM, so forget about upper 40 MHz band at all.
Russian government not only discriminates against gays but also against ethnic minorities, majority of the Sochi staff are Russians from Moscow or Sankt-Peterburg and non Russian local people from Sochi.
Russian government discriminates against ethnical MAJORITY - Russians. I don't care about Olympic staff. I care about lots of other places where inhabitants of Russian Caucasus, for instance, get 2 years of home arrest for murder while Russians get 10 years of Special Regime. I care about Stavropol territory where there is a second Kosovo, with Chechens (Remember Tsarnaev?) occupy traditionally Russian territories. I care about ethnical Chechen criminal organizations openly bearing arms in Moscow where Russians cannot do it. There are lots of national organizations, including Chechen and Tajik ones. But Russian organizations are ruthlessly exterminated. Do you want some more info?
It boils down to which the athlete thinks is more important: his athletic career or his support of identity politics.
Yes, you are right, it's just a politics. And gays are not SUBJECT, but INSTRUMENT of such politics. The question "Who's the SUBJECT?" remains open.
and the russians want the economic benefits that come with hosting.
Forget it. It's already named "Raspiliada", of "Raspil i otkat" meaning "Cut and kickback". It's an economical catastrophe for every Russian except receivers of cuts and kickbacks. Nomina sunt odiosa.
You are right, it will be controlled by Russian government. But the gay propaganda is pretext only. The Government is to figure out who is either Wahhabi or Neo-Nazi. The modern trend is that Wahhabis will sit until end of Olympics, and Neo-Nazi (i.e. everybody who remembers that Russians are the people too) will be incarcerated up to 10 years. http://politzeki.tumblr.com/post/25945827552/i-will-destroy-you-or-what-happens-if-one-does-not
As Russian I must say: Yes. here is lot of antiquated attitude towards gay people. But you should understand:
Here are no laws against gay relations of adult people with consent. And it's good since their relations are their and only their affairs.
There are laws against popularization of gay relations with minors ONLY. And I believe it's good because Russian Gay-Pride parades participants are not gay at all, and their task is to undermine the traditional morale, and they are on payroll of somebody who pays for other means of undermining it, be it stupid TV programming, stupid schoolbooks, stupid university courses, stupid programming languages, and the top declaration of stupidity by Education Minister Fursenko: "Communists were not right when they tried to produce a Creative Man. We should grow up a qualified CONSUMER of others' creativity". Once more, I stress that it's my personal belief, and I must add that it's a popular belief here.
Also, I believe that anti-Gay laws are BAD because they are nothing more than a cheap PR of Duma members that are members of puppet parties and fraudulently elected nonrepresentatives of Russian people in puppet Parliament controlled by You Know Whom.
Once upon a time, working for some Russian defense project I used there a Cellular Modem. The Modem has lots of AT commands that precisely informed about almost everything. As I know, CDMA modems have a similar set of functions.
Then, the second fact. The stingray does NOT use the same frequency as a real tower. It uses any free frequency and real credentials (If it uses the real frequency it will immediately cause lots of interference). And it should overpower the real tower since the phones connect to the most powerful tower. The Chinese cellular suppressors use the same tactic.
What does it mean: Any sufficiently opensource phone ( http://neo900.org/#main for instance) can have a software that monitors the cellular connections for anything strange and immediately report it.
Also, the encoded GSM communications become trivial if you control your phone. It does NOT protect your metainfo but there are other means for it.
I just cannot understand you. If you cannot operate your v.34 because of fax crosstalk from other line, then your wiring is seriously flawed, and your network guy should be disciplined, be it standard phone line or VoIP line. In special cases, I routed the telco line via modem to local PBX so nothing could interfere v.34.
The second cause for terrible torture and slow execution of network guys is a VoIP itself. My work requires use of v.34 modem in some extraordinary circumstances once an year or so. And it appeared that VoIP does not pass v.34, and the only normal phone is General Director's. But still, crosstalk was not the problem.
Now, my Internet link is a Cat-5 FTP hanging on a steel cable. If some day the thieves will cut it off (which is quite strange since the territory is guarded), I'll install a P-274 Soviet Military Field Phone Cable. It's dirt cheap, strong as hell and has inseparable copper and steel braids. No scrap traders buy it.
A pair of light frequencies (one outgoing, one incoming)
I don't believe! It will mean that either there are 250 lasers of different color and some "prism" with 250 outputs to separate and combine them all, or 250 precisely tunable lasers and the same "prism". The TDMA scheme where lasers are ON in their dedicated time slots looks much more affordable.
I understand that such methods are applied in some deep sea cables but...
Really, in Soviet Russia there are enough poles that don't belong to phone company, be it the trolleybus or tram poles, lighting poles, roofs of buildings a.s.o. (The phone network is almost totally monopolized by Rostelecom state monopoly and is underground buried in asbestos-cement tubes almost everywhere). The alternative providers use these poles.
There is a simple way around it. Sell some model of phones without firmware at all or with some primitive firmware with limited functionality but not covered with patents. And supply it with an URL of source code that you can compile yourself. If at least some of routers take this model (they use OpenWRT) and (in Russia - with FreeDOS) with computers - why it cannot be done with phones?
In Soviet Russia Reading doesn't punish YOU! Punishable are only posting, hosting and refusing to filter. Posters should care of their security theirselves, be it disabling of JavaScript or booting a specially crafted anonymous Linux. Webhosting does not need Javascript or browsers. Refusing to filter is ISP crime, not bloggers, and I have a sincere hope that earlier or later the loss of reputation will be less than fines for non-filtering.
And BTW. The earlier the FSB catches all the young Nazi fools for posting a hate speech and they are sentenced to broom the streets - the earlier the Internet security practices will become mainstream. Darwin rulez.
Just for this problem, long-range cordless phones exist. My personal record was a 30+ kilometer modem link installed with a Senao 868R and pair of Zyxel modems. I knew some criminals who walked with Pauperous (highly illegal high power cordless phones).
When I say "reasonably secure" it means that I personally read it's whitepaper and tried to value it's security personally. And I see some methods that can be employed to breach the anonymity of system implemented according to this whitepaper. They exist but they require a disproportional amount of sniffers. The giant NSA/KGB datacenter that diverts and sniffs all the backbone traffic is just not enough. And since the system is totally encrypted and inherently immune to MITM then many popular deanonimization methods will fail, too.
And I look at such systems from deanonymization point of view only since the end to end encryption is trivial now.
A single compromised exit node is enough to breach the anonymity of the user. After this, everything that he writes under a nickname can be attributed to him.
Normally if a protocol is Fast, it is unsecured. if it is Secure, it is slow.
Look at CJDNS. It's fast, simple and reasonably secure. While it doesn't officially provide anonymity, it's IMHO difficult enough to breach it's anonymity without disproportional waste of sniffing equipment. The NSA or KGB sniffers on backbone just aren't enough.
You are not right. Severity of Soviet laws is compensated with non-necessity of their fulfillments. There are lots of laws requiring ISP to filter. But the ISP are commercial organizations and they understand that filtering undermines their business, with all consequences of it. Also, they will not filter VPN, TOR and other similar protocols unless required by (nonexistent for now) law.
No. You can just incarcerate and torture the rebel leaders out of existence (it's being done in Russia now). The result will be a leaderless rebellion only (again as in Russia where every fact of rape or murder causes immediate riot). Disclaimer (and hint): I do NOT indicate ethnicity and faith of rapists and murderers since it is punishable.
The logical consequence will be a rebellion that cannot be stopped because everybody who might represent it is incarcerated.
And you cannot use all the phone and Internet interception because displeasure against said rapists and murdered is so commonplace that you cannot find rebels in crowds of displeasured people.
My own personal solution to this problem is to phase out every and each program, OS and everything other that downloads upgrades without owner's intervention, and there would be a really serious need in order to leave such a program, with specific traffic shaping crafted specifically for it. To be meaningful the article should include:

According to Russian sources, now the stores of 2012-2013 years winter snow are being unpacked and laid down for Olympics.
It's funny since there are lots of Russian proverbs about last year's snow.
It boils down to which the athlete thinks is more important: his athletic career or his support of identity politics.
