I was really pissed off when Texas started requiring thumb prints to get a drivers license, but what choice did I have? Every once in a while you can refuse to give your social security number to people, but once rules are set you have a simple choice, put up with the envasion of privacy or don't do X. Personally I would be really pissed off by biometric scans at airports, even showing an ID is mildly offensive, but when you have to get from New York to L.A. in a day what are your options?
The biggest problem here is that people who use [and therefore in some cases buy] software do so because of the features of the software. While it would be nice if the company was cool enough to allow transfer of licences, or support multiple operating systems, or any other of nice things... it does not tend to be a factor affecting purchasing.
This seems like an ideal situation to set up as many free wireless access points as possible... or even better...
All we have to do is convince people who already have the networks to open them up to people who need them. When is a better time than now to open some of those corp. networks?
You should be able to do four things:
0. Have a sense of import / interest. (Know when to care)
1. Know how to find something out. (basic research skills)
2. Know how to evaluate what you find out. (thinking / analysis).
3. Know how to articulate your opinion. (writing, speaking, etc.).

I can honestly say that I have never manged to get my G4 processor temp above 48 degrees C, (in a fanless cube).

Things like this make me realize that periodically our massive defense budget does yield something good, the the internet... cool robotic planes...
