Well if security of the patch is a concern, follow these simple rules. Make sure that the patch is digitally signed and verify the signature. Your only other recourse is to unplug your Webserver from the net and wait for Suse.
I don't need to move, because I enjoy the freedoms I have in this country. The reason I am bitching is it really ticks me off when I see the govt. passing any legislation that takes or has the potential to take away those freedoms. As for moving to another country, why don't you try it, you can sit around and watch the Food Network, swill beer and eat twinkings from any couch in any trailer home in any country. Besides if you are not willing to at least voice your opnion, exercise your rights, and defend those rights then you don't belong here anyways. Oooo look Emril is on, I can't defend my rights right now, come back in an hour...BAAMM
I have nothing to hide, but try reading the patriot act, and you will see what wide sweeping power this act gives to the government. Even if there intentions are good ones, they can still make your life a hell, by following you around and intruding upon your right to privacy, information, etc., and there is nothing you can do about it, except accept ther apologies. Besides the whole issue, is not unjustified monitoring of people, it is the fact that the Patriot act seems to circumvent due proccess. Before the Patriot Act passed, law enfocement need probable cause of evidence of wrong doing. Now all they have to do is tell a judge that they need the warrant "becuase it is in the intrest of National Security.". How often in the history of man has power been abused. Do you think that this new power will not be abused? God I hope not.
Personally myself, I would be extremely leary of using my personal phone and Personal Net acces ever again, as for losing your job, I have seen way to many employers 'let people go' after suspicion (wether that suspicion was justified or not)has been cast upon their morals, character, or after non work related incisents.
The whole point of the Patriot Act, is that they DON'T need to have real proof of wrong doing, only suspicion. Try researching what the Patriot Act is, and tell me that you are not worried about your rights and the possible abuse of due proccess.
Unfortunately, they have to keep track of who has what book. This way they can charge the late fees. Also they need to keep track of how many times you return litarature late so they cna determine a pattern and turn off you library card if it is a habitual problem. Now that does not mean that they have to keep the information on titles returned, but they still need to track you general habits so as to say to determine if you are a godd or bad patron, and wether you should keep your library privledges.
Your missing the point. Say you are doing legitamate research on some topic and require a book, let's say the anarchists' cookbook. You check it out and read it and obtain the neccessary information for you research. Now the Fed's (based on a information from a disgruntled girlfriend that was supplied to the TIPS program.) get a warrant for your library info, see that you checked out the anarchists' cookbook, and label you as a terrorist. Now through the Patriot Act they get warrants for tapping your phones and Internet connection, subponea your employer for all of your phone call and Net activity, so on and so forth. By the time yourealize what's happening, you now you have no job, no phone, no Net access, no library card and a very happy ex-girlfriend all because of the Patriot Act being able to give easy access to the Feds for seeing your library habits with out proof of any wrong doing.
I to have done the same thing. Qmail, Qpopper, UW IMAP, Open LDAP, and Squirel Mail on a Linux box. For email needs, It does the exact same thing an Exchange server can do, for the same amount of people, on 1/2 the amount of hardware. The nice thing is, Outlook, OE, Netscape Mail, or whatever email client my users decide to choose will work as long as it talks POP/IMAP/SMTP. My only delima is the calendar features of Outlook. I have been searching for almost 2 years now for an open source replacement on the server side To share M$ Outlooks calendars. We were currently using the Net Folders feature(slow and unreliable, but better than nothing), built into Outlook, but Outlook XP no longer supports it. If something doesn't happen soon, the decision makers are going to force Exchange on me, because they don't want to loose there conference room scheduling calendar! What a way to justify all of that money!
Why is slashdot the bad neighbor. They are just providing you, the user the links to cool information. If everyone of you slashdot effect whiners were to use the Google cache instead, then these sites would not crash.
Don't you look for alternate ways to work in the morning when you know that certain roads are always congested with traffic, or are you one of those people that contribute to the rush hour grid lock?
Instead of whining about slashdot being evil and crashing peoples servers, try being proactive and find alternate routes to the same information.
Besides how cool would it be to see the slashdot effect happen to Google.:)
Taco probably doesn't care, because intelligent people just use Google and view the cahced copy instead of even trying to get to the real page. If more of you/. effect whiners would try it, maybe these servers wouldn't go down as often.
For the non-inteligent people out there, try this link Click Here
Then answer me this, A few years ago a US sy plane crashed in China. Why did we negotiate with China to got our aircraft (and crew) back instead of just bombing it?
I agree, I larger location maybe better as well. There were 20 People cramed into a small section of sidewalk in front of a Starbucks. Lets go to the Elmwood Inn next time:)
Why would I want to bother with blinking LED's. I mean if that was my only option to steal your data, then so be it, but there are so many other ways that are easier and much more practical, that I can't see this as a serious threat. I'm glad to finally read a post from someone that actually has their head screwed on right and can apply a little common sense, instead of filling up the posts with stupid arguments about tin foil hats and the such. Sheesh they expect me to pay for this tripe!
Everyone needs to relax a little bit. WHO CARES!!! If somebody is that serious about stealing your data, then they are going to get it some how! Trust me, I can probably find easier ways to steal your data then capturing blinking LED's. The fact that everyone is arguing about this is ludicrous.
...so a telescope in a van parked across the street could, in theory, extract the data...
If someone is going to go to all of that trouble to view blinking led's, as far as I'm concerned, God bless 'em if they can get into my network. There are so many easier and cost effective ways to gain access. Half the time all you have to do is wait outside until the receptionist leaves and sit down at her computer. Chances are she didn't even logout. If you get caught, just tell her you are with tech support and you will be back later and then run like hell. Not that I've ever done that before;)
I tell you what...SPAM my phone all you want, as long as I get a free phone, free service, and free long distance. Kind of like AvantGo for my palm, except for cell phones. Who knows this get it for free so you can be our captive audience service might work.
You will never convince the home market. There is no real money in the home market...unless you can get it into business. When people have to use it at work, then they will want to use it at home. People IMO like to use the samething at home as they do at work.
Preach it brother. Standardization is the only way to get into the desktop environment. IMHO standarzation==simplicity=="useable desktop environment". Why do you think Mac users have such a cult like following. They are smart enought not to be biased by M$ hype and advertising, but yet they like to use an OS that is bundled with apps that function, and is simple to use. Even M$ to an extent relized this. Why do you think they keep trying to bundle software with their OS. Make it simple for the user, and it will sell. If you want to be part of the "Linux Elite" then stick with Debian or Slackware!
I have been using varios linux distros for 5+ users. My first distro was slackware. It was no easy feat to install. I enjoyed tinkering with it to get it to work. Unfortunately most people have lives and can't be bothered with playing with there OS to get it to function. The distro's have come a long way, but non-technical people still can not be bothered with configuring the software on their computer. If this distro will get more copies of Linux onto the desktop, then great. Now I can actually recomend Linux besides for just servers!
Imagine how many Quake III servers I can run on the couple dozen P2 computers I have laying around...
I hate Microsoft and especially IIS, but if I was a IIS admin, I would be lovin' this. Enjoy it while it lasts. :)

Technically we were not at war with Vietnam either. I gues wee could have bombed the plane in China and just called it a "Police Action"

Exactly,
