look at the internet. People couldn't get access to it until people started making money from it. Now alot of the internet is fucked up, but the good parts are still there, and its cheap to get online. The idea that science should be untainted by capitalism is fucked up. Its not like scientists will become corrupt money whores if they get the chance.

  3. Designers have no place in Video games on On the Process of Creating a Game... · · Score: 1

Just like writers have no place in hollywood. I haven't played a fun game since Starcraft, but that had massive problems with hackers. If you're a smart game designer, odds are you're not going to be hired because game companies know that most people buy from hype, box decor, and in game cinemas. Game companies only want programmers and artists not designers.

Apparently the glowing plants took over all of the surface of Mars and are now emiting a spooky blue glow. Heh, but seriously how cool would it be to start remotely teraforming Mars? Like another slashdot poster said. If we know absolutely nothing is on it, maybe we should start bombing Mars with seeds and start an ecosystem there.

If you work at a recycling center, just have contacts with a local super computing center. I'm sure they'd love to have all the old boards running, chained together in parallel processing. Its a revolutionary thing, to have FREE COMPUTERS. Of course, old ones should be scrapped, but anything above like a 386 could be chained up for more power :)

  9. Its exactly like a crowbar! on 2600 Responds to Appellate Court · · Score: 1

DCMA states that if you own DeCSS Facilitates that you're a criminal. Sure I'll bite that DeCSS can be analogous to a crowbar. A crowbar is a tool just like DeCSS. So a man owns a crowbar(A tool). Sure he can break into a library and steal books. But maybe he just wants to pull some rusty nails out of his house, or maybe he wants to rescue someone buried under rubble. So a man owns DeCSS(A tool). Sure he can steal DVDs. But maybe he just wants to make a backup, or maybe he wants to design DVD drives. There are legitimate reasons a man should own DeCSS as most every college university would defend. The idea of imprisoning a man for owning a tool is not even borderline facism, its a direct application of it. "Sorry son, your dad is going to prison. He should have known better to be in the possession of a crowbar."

  10. The Ps2 is going to finally have internet games? on Sony PS2 To Sport Netscape and SSL · · Score: 1

Sony had me scared with their ideas of releasing the PS3. With all the games out for the ps2 being generally shitty so far, I was hoping on getting a nice unhackable netgame from a console. Until some nice net games come out, my Ps2 is just a trumped up dvd player.

  11. You're wrong on A.I. Software To Command NASA Mission · · Score: 1

A.I. defined by academia is the use of a computer to solve problems. The study of AI is basically just the study of using the computer to solve the harder problems. Learning algorithms can be used in AI, but stuff as simple as pathfinding is AI too.

Not to mention billions defending patents etc. #3) Unvoiced threats to put other companies out of buisness which result in unfair profits. Totay many regions go without broadband just because its better for a company to do certain spots. The government should SOOOO totally be involved with things like this. Open source vs Microsoft. Capatilism works because it makes stupid people work. Too bad the intellectuals are not part of the equation...

But again, most software should be sponsored by the government, with a value added incentive. After people write software and submit it to the government, the companies get money based on how many people use it... But at the same time, people could build off it. Lots of problems with it, but some sort of intensive revision needs to be done.

  17. I think you're very wrong on a point on Microsoft Isn't Slowing Down · · Score: 1

Just think: suppose MS died, and there was no one controlling the desktop market? I'm willing to bet you a herring that feature development on ye' olde' favourite Free OS would slow. There would be no need to improve it at the current rate because you're not racing anyone. One of the main reasons people develop on a free OS is to customize it for their tastes other than trying to bring down the big guys. Competing is what capatilism breeds. Microsoft's existence isn't all cheery. Yes, they made new technology, but most of it was only because they stole the ideas from someone else. Having Microsoft around means many individuals won't spend thousands of hours to implement ideas because Microsoft will just steal your idea and compete you into the ground.

Radio was bad enough that a stupid DJ could influence people around him on what is good music and culture, but you had your pick of stations, and not any one DJ could influence everyone at once. MTV... Basically says what culture is to everyone. And a limited directed bandwith... The power to direct culture, to direct spending habits. This control only results in boybands, crappy music and eventually the real world. I'm glad the music scene is seeing the light of the internet. one of the best examples of MTV being hell was the Punk schene before and after Greenday. Before: Cool people with interesting views. After: Fashion rejects with no clue decorating clubs while the smart punks blew the scene.

Sony releases PS3 within 1 year of the Ps2, no after no good games released, and no use of the netcable... basically the Ps2 was just a trumped up Dvd player. Microsoft stops development on its software after it beats out its competition. Microsoft will change and complicate any standards it holds the power over in attempt to eliminate competition. Bleh, corporations, play bad games... You're just taking monopolies to mean there is no competition... Well there isn't a good lot to choose from... kinda like the Presidency one can say... but basically all companies eventually converge into a monopoly over time. Just stating that anything that gets big ugly corporations out of art is a plus. Now only if someone could find a way to destroy MTV.

  24. If you design art for money, you suck on BoyCott Advance · · Score: 2

Art should be designed just for experession, and not for monatary compensation. Money has many evils that come with it that ruin artistic expression. Money may land you a larger development team. Money may buy programmers who wouldn't code unless they were getting paid... But money encourages sellouts, premature product release, lame copycats, etc. I'd LOVE to do design with any computer game makers, and they wouldn't even have to pay me for the work. To me its a work of art, its life to design... If everyone in the world would then steal my work, then I'm happy. If everyone in the world starts "stealing" any games they want then the evil monopolies may think of moving out of the arts.

  25. What are the ethics of monopolies? on BoyCott Advance · · Score: 1
