I've been reading about a lot of different types of DSL, and one is VDSL. VDSL is "very high bit rate DSL". Downstream it is capable of 52mbps. It's different from ADSL in that ADSL uses copper lines and VDSL uses fiber.
So basically, you're not screwed, Verizon just has to get on the ball and get things rolling.
I'd love to have VDSL....
