QNX 4.25 uses shadow passwords. The crack still works on the shadow passwords, but at least it's one step removed from the world-readable/etc/passwd file.
at least they walk the walk and don't just talk the talk
it all comes down to making your politics personal... if you espouse something, personalize it, live it, make others understand that you truly believe it
i have nothing but respect for RMS for his stand... he drew a line in the sand and he's sticking to it!
Cygnus' bundling of gcc is used by Wind River Systems as the cross-compiler for their embedded OS, VxWorks. Cygnus, I'm sure, has been making decent royalties from that relationship. BTW, Cygnus did not blow Linux off. They have been the major supporters for gcc, gnats, glibc for a very long time.

If people are interested in flat panel multimedia speakers, they should check out Monsoon Power's MM-1000. More pricey (around $200) but great reviews.

Java for EGCS

I just started using Java (I'm a C++ programmer at heart) and I have to say that I'm very happy about the portability of the language. But there are two things that bug me. Getting rid of pointers... I can live with that. Getting rid of operator overloading??? That's dumb.
Why write c = a.add(b); when c = a + b; is SO much better?
Just because operator overloading has been abused doesn't mean that it should be removed from the toolbox!

This is a very good change... but not because the contact information has been removed.
What's more important is that whois now queries the databases of the other registrars without having to type
$ whois -h whois.register.com
This is *much* better.

You may also want to check out another mini-dist based on Debian that is aimed at a firewall/routing box booting from one floppy.
Cisco licensed QNX last May, so I don't think they're going to use Linux or go Open Source. Check out QNX's press release.
