I voted for "the blacklist." If that weren't there the "laugh track" would have to be the one. Everything else seems quite frivolous (well, except the dumbass Valdez maneuver).

I had no problem with that.

Winmodems are garbage even if you use windows. I've seen so many people get frustrated with them and I told them what to ask for when getting a new one. A lot of people really like their DOS terminal software because the windows equivalents generally sucked.

Remember Telemate? I first got on the net in '92 with that and a 2400 baud modem. Ftp, telnet, and archie was all I used. Winmodem wasn't exactly an option for me.

in saying that *all* of the money goes into education, it may not be that bad an idea.

As long as they don't increase the tariff on international orders (hah, free trade my ass). I live on the east coast of Canada, where duty is a bitch, and I still pay a 15% tax on top of that (the company sometimes registers to automatically include the tax in purchases, such as Digi-Key, else the tax is charged at the border). If the money was guaranteed to do something useful, like being spent on education (my high school upgraded from PETs to 286s a couple of years before I got there, that's unacceptable (though we still played with the PETs)) I wouldn't mind so much.

However, it seems that this money is going to our expensive "millenium song" and into one-industry towns turned no-industry towns where people refuse to leave (hmm.. money going out is high, money coming in is virtually nothing, I wonder where the magic money is coming from).

I wish we had such a guarantee.

Actually, this seems interesting. It's something we kind of need at this point, I think. You could even write a tutorial builder in TCL/TK or something.

It's as old as me, actually (1977) but I look at it with awe, thinking things like, "this board was probably *hand-designed*, amazing!"

Ah, old gear... I got, from a now defunct US military base, a couple of dumb terminals, a few 286s, and a Zenith 10 port serial board (actually two ISA boards, each with a Z80).

I tried to find out how to get that serial board thing working in Linux but found no info (it was in '94). They were apparently designed specifically for the US navy, and Zenith claimed it didn't even exist when I called them (multiple times, multiple divisions) looking for specs of some kind so that I could write my own driver.
