  1. Re:Can this slow progress? on The Linux Development Platform Specification : Beta · · Score: 2

Its basically just a set of library dependencies.

A distribution maker (redhat, mandrake, debian) can make a dummy RPM package 'standard-2000' that has dependencies on the named libraries. An app developer makes sure their RPM depends only on this package. Voila, everything works.

The library numbering scheme means I can have multiple versions of libraries on my system.
A distribution can move to glibc-2.2 when it comes out, and place glibc-2.1 on the CD to be available for 'standard-2000' if a package requires it. And later you can repeat the process adding a 'standard-2001', etc package as required.
Then the CD box can say "Supports standards 2000,2001,.. " and the user knows that the third party app will work cleanly on this system.

  2. One solution on Northwest Searches Employees' Home Computers · · Score: 1

One solution that has been proposed recently and is to be included (is included) in upcoming Irish legislation is this:

Faced with encrypted documents (subpoenaed from you) a judge can compel you to hand over decrypted forms of these documents, with some form of proof that the encrypted doc == decrypted doc.

You could provide the following by making sure your encryption scheme sticks a md hash of the
encrypted doc outside the encrypted doc.

This reduces the problem to the same (legal) problem as before computing/email; should you be forced to hand over personal documents. It leaves
    your secret passphrase secret.

  3. Re:Not fighting the format on MP3.com Countersues RIAA · · Score: 1
Remember by the MP3.com business model, the music companies earn their money as the users buy the CDs.

RIAA would like to take MP3.com out of the picture because then they remove most of the 'legitimate' mp3 market. Remove MP3.com; make SDMI the standard for web sites and the mp3 player makers can be successfully sued as their devices become liable under the Millenium copyright act; the only way of making mp3's being to copy them.

The flurry of law suits demonstrates they do not accept that they can't stop the format.

  4. They are attacking the format. on MP3.com Countersues RIAA · · Score: 1
It's as if RIAA is just attacking a sound FORMAT as opposed to actual copyright violations. Sick! Good luck to MP3.com. Exactly. The 'copyright industries' have realized that they cannot prevent copying. When it was 'pirates' they could go sue them, but now they are losing the business to everybody copying (note: the number of CDs sold last year fell by a _third_).

Hence they are aiming to control playing, not copying. Hence the DVD and SDMI issues; if they control the players they control the market.

  5. Its not the offspring of the crops, but the pests on Gene Leakage · · Score: 1

"but then many GM crops are infertile ..."

Its not the offspring of the crops, but the weeds/insects that are the problem.Overuse of the pesticide/herbicide ,by making all the crop produce {produce the pesticide internally, resistant to the herbicide} selects for nastier pests in the next generation. I think that this point got edited out of the interview.

The crops are infertile in order to "protect the intellectual property" of the biotect company, eg.
Monsanto, Du Pont, Novartis; the farmer must buy seed every year instead of using some of last years crop. This is a major danger in itself. Say Company M uses a particular farm/area as its supplier of seed. Now if something happens to that farm/area (flood/bad weather/disease?) then bang goes next years crop. The backups we use to handle such day-to-day disasters are gone. We're used to having millions of tonnes of seed around; having enough seed to get things going again in a few years time is not sufficient when the whole world is dependent on you for seed (as these companies are aiming for: Monsanto is aiming at controlling 100% of the worlds Soya supply by the end of the year).

  6. The penicillin reference is very relevant on Gene Leakage · · Score: 1

The penicillin reference is very relevant.

The problem is that one of the major problems with current/proposed GM products is the adding of
{herbicide,etc}-resistance to crops, eg. Monsanto adding roundup-resistance to Soya, etc.

Penicillin resistance developed through the overuse of penicillin: the few bacteria that survived had resistance to it, and a host all to themselves. Next generation bacteria spread the resistance. Best Practice is to only use antibiotics, etc where necessary.

The same threat exists with herbicide-resistant crops: next generation weeds could be roundup-proof. Good practice is to only use herbicides where necessary, commercial interest (for the manufacturer) is to use as much herbicide as possible. Bang, conflict of interest.
