We should also recall that there have been two -other- major shifts from what were bruited about as 'cast in stone' positions by Sun: First, that they would never stop supporting OpenLook in favour of Motif; Second, that they would never support anything but a fast-CPU-based workstation on everyone's (physical) desk. Well-- how times change! I can only say that, with this sort of announcement, that the folks at Sun are readying -some- form of Linux distro/support of their own. History does not predict, but it offers guide-posts. Cheers, Drieux

  2. Re:On a more serious note... on British WW II Codebook Online · · Score: 1

What is presented here is more of a code than a cypher. The differentiation consists of how the plaintext is rendered secure. In this instance, one five letter group replaces one or more letters or words. This last is the key difference, since most cyphers replace one letter by one or more letters/numbers/both. It could be argued that the other difference is that most cyphers (these days, at least) are machine-hosted and not worked up on a code-pad as would have been the case with Admiralty No. 5. Have a look at the papers hosted on this site for further amplification and some rather thought-provoking information...not to mention a lovely photo of a bit of Ireland. Cheers, Andrew

  5. NIDDM and diet (or lack of same) on Hacker's Diet · · Score: 1

Whilst the diet and semi-exercise plan recommended by the authour have merit, he overlooks the fact that, over time, those of us who are of a more corporeal nature tend to develop this particularly insidious disease. In what was an admittedly fast scan of the material, I failed to notice any mention of Type-II diabetes, and am somewhat curious about this.

In most cases, this disease is directly related to one's diet being too high in fats, and that one is not doing enough exercise to raise the met rate over minimum. It is interesting to note tht a perfectly healthy person will test as being strongly diabetic (-very- elevated blood glucose) after ingesting a high-fat, low-sugar meal. The clinical trial that was done on this actually used serum lipids, but one is as indicative as the other.

If (the collective and individual) you have any of the classic symptoms of this disease, PLEASE do see a physician. Having waited a bit too long myself, I would prefer for no-one else to have go the same route I have.

Ah, well. I recall when Comdisco failed in the attempt they made to show Shwlob what was about to happen in a simple email system, too.

The comment in re the double-beam weapon lacks logic...or at least a knowledge of martial arts, both western and Oriental.

One of the most difficult weapons for a swordsman to defeat is a bo or quarter-staff. In either world, the speed and momentum of the weapon make it one of the few that 'holds it own' against most other bladed weapons. Go look at Demura-sensei's book on the bo, or any decent work on advanced aikijutsu.

It is not also the case that Federal supercession can be argued here, as in those instances where Federal law has been intrepreted by the Supremes? I have in mind those Second Amendment cases where the several states have decided not to enforce what Congress has decided is 'best' for us all.

Whilst I, too, am not admitted to the practise of law, being a concerned libertarian (yes-- small 'l') I have soemthing of a vested interest.
