  1. Re: Do PostScript printers have hard drives? on Game of Life in Postscript · · Score: 1

Out of the 21 printers we have at work, only six have no hard drive. Of course, I'm counting a couple of pure copiers among that six. Two or three of the bigger/faster ones have their own web server, so we can check up on job status and such.

My favorite is the one that has a storage server about the size of a G4 Cube and connects to the scanner and printer by IEEE 1394. Xerox Synergix 8850, iirc.

Of course, working at Kinko's kinda makes me giggle every time I see a little inkjet cranking away at a single sheet.

  2. Re:ATA 100 versus 133 on Apple Updates Xserve, Announces Xserve RAID · · Score: 1
Not only are ATA 100 and ATA 133 completely compatible backwards and forwards (at the cost of running at the slower speed), they happen to run at the same speed!

The hard drives are able to send and receive data at about 40MB/s on average. I have no clue offhand what the burst rate is, so that might actually break 100MB/s, but I doubt it.

Now, if you have more than one drive on an ATA channel, it might actually make sense to have more than 100MB/s on that channel. Both drives may burst at the same time, and the bandwidth of ATA133 could be utilized.

However. In the case of the XServe, every drive has its own data bus. There are two reasons for anyone to use ATA133: it's a pretty buzzword, and it's no more expensive than ATA100 but they can charge more.

Otherwise... If I had an extra several thousand dollars, I know where it would go. *grin*

  3. Harry=Anakin? on Review: Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets · · Score: 1

It seemed to me a lot more like the pod race in TPM. The sound those Nimbus 2001s made was too much like a pod, and the floating bleachers were distinctly similar.

Oh, and it was much longer than its relevant use in the plot, despite all the prettyness.

Well ok, so Anakin's arm didn't turn into jelly. At least not yet.

Anyway, back to your regularly scheduled /.

How does Christianity fare in these three epics? Poorly. No wonder the fundies are holding bookburnings.

Hrm... Funny you should mention that. The Hogwarts group in HP seems to me to be the most Christian group of witches and wizards I've ever heard of. They celebrate Halloween, Christmas and Easter, not Samhain, Solstice and Beltain.

So. It bothers me a little when the religious go off about how evil Harry Potter is.

(Really, the religions ought to be strong enough not to worry what isn't said about them in these fables. It's just for fun.)

    Thank you for that.

Anyway. Back to your regularly scheduled /.

I used a Matrox for a while (ooh, I've got AGP to both screens!) for 3d animation. I've since switched to a better 3d card and a nice PCI card, since Photoshop and Premiere need no nice 3d performance.

I have a feeling that in your situation, you could set your game to run on a GF4 or something, and run your IDE on a PCI card with a high refresh...

And then, when you want to test for lowest common denominator systems, you can just switch!

At some point last year, my gf's iMac monitor died completely, so this process was very necessary.

Who's to say he didn't survive? There's a couple of thoeries to back this up. There's the Jedi Knight character that bears a striking theatrical (if not physical) resemblence to Maul, who just happens to float around as a result of his missing lower half. The other theory has to do with the fact that, hey, cloning's the big thing about this trilogy.

    > They should have left out the driods- Obi Wan

There's a lot of discussion about this problem all over this thread. In as much that droids can be formatted, and that Vader never had a well-lit chance to see the droids, I'd say it's ok. And Obi-Wan can be too subtle for his own good.

2: Anakin's Rodian friend, who cheers during the pod-race.

3: The guy who helped Jar-Jar off his tropical tauntaun at the end (what was that anyway?)

4: Standing next to the Jedi (women no less) on the stairs at the very end.

And probably countless other roles Lucas thought appropriate to occupy /.ers' time with. Happy hunting!
