Javascript is certainly leagues behind many other languages in terms of ellegance but it has one overwhelming advantage.
It's the only option on the client that is generally supported.
The javascript juggernaut rolls on because we can't write modern web applications any other way.
Since most developers are getting forced into writing their client application almost entirely in javascript, it isn't too much of a stretch to throw in node and mongo to take it full stack, the performance and ease becomes pretty compelling at that point.
