I had really thought that for a technical bunch Slashdot users would at least have half a clue about the facts and information behind global warming.
But after reading the comments for this story I can see that most of you don't have the slightest idea what on earth you are talking about.
Some people must really just like to see their comments on the screen because they really don't have anything intelligent to contribute.
Has anyone here actually ever seen a graph of the global average temperature?
Can anyone actually think that the Earth is so large that we couldn't alter the climate?
Does anyone realise that global warming will bring far more extreme weather? Not only extreme heat, but cold as well. Plus bigger storms.
Don't you realise that one of the greatest dangers of global warming is rising sea levels? Remember that most of the worlds largest cities are built on the coast. Imagine what an increase of 1 metre would do.
And of course it is true that the world has been much warmer/colder in the past than it is now, but we didn't have such a big stake in the current climate setup before. Imagine how much it will cost to keep those cities clear of rising sea waters. Imagine how much it will cost to move all those people. Imagine how much it will cost in lives and money when global food production is completely screwed. Imagine what happens to the mid-west USA when the Dust Bowl comes back with a vengence.
On their website it says that "API NetWorks, Inc. (formerly Alpha Processor, Inc.) was founded in June of 1998 and is a privately held company based in Concord, Massachusetts. Funded by Samsung Electronics Co., LTD. and Compaq Computer Corp."
"API NetWorks is a co-developer (with AMD) of the next generation high-speed I/O HyperTransportTM (formerly known as LDT) technology..."
Plus, it also says that they provide Alpha based solutions and also do development work on the Alpha.
I found this comment at Byte's web site from one of their stories about CeBit.
"Yes, and there was quite a large Bluetooth piconet work (at least 50 devices, 10 base stations) in the American pavilion in Building One, and it all Just Worked. No muss, no fuss, just operational equipment, interoperating when wanted, staying out of the way of other systems when not."
Very interesting considering Bluetooth was supposed to be a total flop!!!
Nokia has a press release up which says they are going to sell AT&T a GSM/EDGE/UTMS system, but it is at 1900MHz, same as the current US GSM. It does GPRS as well.
Maybe you are using the Half Rate codec in your phone. Sometimes it is enabled by default because it saves battery life, but it lowers the quality. Try switching it to a Full Rate or Enhanced Full Rate codec instead. Most Nokia phones can do that if you know how.
Here is the original paper describing Whisper
on
DoCoMos Finger Phone
·
· Score: 1
Here is the original paper about Whisper as a
PDF file. It was presented at an ACM, Computer Human Interaction conference last year. You may need to register to read it, but anyway, it is quite interesting.
The way you hold your hand looks to others as if you are talking on a really small mobile phone (so small they can't see it:-). So actually you don't look as crazy to others as you do with just a handsfree earpiece. And the sound conduction through your finger bones is very good. So good that it is actually easier to hear in a noisy environment than with a normal phone.
They also found that people didn't shout into their phone when using Whisper, because the finger in the ear gave better feedback to your voice volume.
Bluetooth frequency hops at 1600 times a second. But from what I recall, IEEE802.11 hops at a much lower rate, just a few hundred times per second.
I also remember that if you installed a bluetooth device and a wireless LAN card in the same PC it would kill the LAN. But then I haven't heard anything more about that problem for quite a while.
You have the wrong country. Sure Australia has had plenty of animals die off, but the situation is much more apparent in New Zealand which is where the Kiwi actually come from.
Besides, you keep up with that sort of attitude and eventually you kill off enough of the biosphere that the whole thing collapses and takes us with it.
I am running it under NT4 as well and I was playing with the NT Task Manager and noticed that it spends about 40% of its time running in kernal (using the Show Kernal Times menu).
Does anyone else think that is a little strange. No other application causes my PC to do that...

What does this mean for API Networks then? http://www.alpha-processor.com

Since I am living in Finland I think I can safely comment on this.
Sending SMS messages is incredibly popular in Finland and there are an amazing amount of services available via SMS.
Some numbers:
Over 65% of Finns own a cell phone (population is about 5.5 million)
Last year there were 650 million SMS messages sent
And the speed some of them can type on those phones is pretty amazing too :-)
Also, if I recall correctly, the number of cellphones exceeded the number of fixed lines in Finland last year
