  1. Why do you want this? on On Hollywood and the Portrayal of Computers · · Score: 1

Seems to me that if computer oriented movies were more popular there would be a lot more clueless goons trying to break into the field. It's firghtening how many people have been in my programming classes that are only there for the money and truly have no idea how a computer works.

  2. NSA good reading book!! on Ask Slashdot: What's the Real NSA Like? · · Score: 2

If you can find it, get a copy of "Puzzle Palace". Written by a fellow that retired from the NSA. It's got just about everything you ever wanted to know in it.

  3. Self Thinkers on New House of Reps Site on Science, Math, & Tech Education · · Score: 1

The unfortunate reality of public schooling is blatantly obvious. Children are not only NOT taught to think, more importantly they are discouraged from it. Creating free thinkers means that the children will start asking questions that teachers cannot, or are not allowed to answer.

If we teach them to be free thinkers then they might get all sorts of crazy ideas. In all my time at public school, the concept of free thinking was never, ever raised. It's a bit like Dead Poets' Society. Not until my first year in college did any instructors mention the idea of free thinking, and only then because they knew we had never been taught to do it. It takes a long time to unlearn the crap they teach in public schools.

  4. Any publicity is good. on GT Interactive Sued for piracy · · Score: 1

Look at this from the angle that no matter how it happened, evil or accident...both companies will still get a ton of publicity out of this. Most people wont want to believe GT did it on purpose. Besides, they'll settle out of court for a lot less than 5 million. Seriously, if I were an evil little software company needing to boost sales and I found a legitimate mistake it might be tempting to call a press conference and blow it all out of proportion.

  5. Good book on the topic on We Lost the Privacy War · · Score: 1

If you want to read a REAL indepth book on the NSA, get "Puzzle Palace". It's a bit older, but still worth the insight into the secret workings of the NSA.

  6. Time for something new. on Congress concerned about Echelon · · Score: 1

Of course they have tech. that we don't! If the public is getting into high powered clusters (cheap too) imagine what someone with real money could put together! With enough power, almost anything can be opened with brute force. My thought has always been that we have higher numbers of diversified people than the government. Why not get proactive about writing something REALLY secure. Base the encryption on something that can neither be duplicated nor faked. Like a couple network time servers, etc.

  7. Abnoxious Politicians on New York Times profiles John Romero & John Carmack · · Score: 2

A lot of these shootings are by kids from "good" families. Middle class suburban types. Professionals. One of the characteristics of these families is that both parents generally work, and work doesn't stop at 5:00 for a lot of professionals. I wish politicians would simply get the nerve to tell people that you can't expect to work constantly and never spend time with your kids and then hope they turn out ok. People should not have children if they can't spend time with them.

  8. Macintosh Address on BellAtlantic ADSL absurdity · · Score: 1

In fact, the iMac runs the same basic OS as any other high end Mac. The control panels are exactly the same, and if one were to open the "AppleTalk" control panel on any OS 8.1 Mac there is an "info" option either under file or in plain site. After opening "get info" the hardware address is right there ta bite ya. It is virtually the same on ANY machine running OS 8.1!

  9. Contract Work on Why Work Sucks · · Score: 1

Seems to me that companies might rather hire contract work by independants than actually hire people and have to pay benefits, etc...
