In the west side of the Netherlands we drink dune-water, i.e. water pumped from reservoirs deep beneath our dunes. It takes centuries for rain-water to trickle through the sand to where it collects and no-one is even allowed to walk in the area above these reservoirs. There is some treatment, i.e. fluorite is added, but other than that, it's straight from ground to tap.
I wouldn't like to drink anything directly from an open water reservoir, not where I live anyway.
