  1. internet access requires a computer? on Your Favorite Support Anecdote · · Score: 1

I worked helpdesk for a few years while in college. The best call I ever took was a lady who bought a modem to get internet access through the university. Unable to figure out how to use it she called the helpdesk. One of the first questions of course was did you install it in your computer? The answer was "Oh I need a computer to use this?"

I just use fetchmail to download my email off the exchange server. Once it is local you can use whatever you want to read it. I use a combination of pine and thunderbird.

Sendmail is slower, more complex, and less secure than qmail. Only advantage I think sendmail has is its flexablity. Qmail isn't perfect but in my experience its a lot better than sendmail. When you get sick of patching sendmail check out www.qmail.org. And if you don't think Qmail is battle tested, go ahead and try finding *any* exploits for it.

I am amazed how popular MySQL is considering its feature set and its license. I have used many commercial databases and have been using Postgres for about five years. I also have a fair number of clients using MySQL. In five years of heavy use I have yet to get any corrupted data in postgres. This says a lot because I have fixed a multitude of corrupt tables in MySQL. Could have transactions fixed these problems, in some cases yes. One thing that bugs me more than anything in MySQL is the lack of the Sequence. This is a very useful feature that almost all RDBMS have. The lack of transactions and sequences has pretty much kept me away from MySQL. I also am currently using postgres with a piece of medical software that we sell. This data is absolutly critical. After five years of stabilty with postgres I decided it was up to the task. This product has been in use for one year with no problems. I would have never trusted MySQL with this data. MySQL is a very good piece of software and has its place, but I am glad articles like this are pointing out its downfalls. I have found a lot of people just using MySQL due to its hype when in reality they need somthing with transactions.

I purchased two OEM Intel pII 450 chips about a year ago from millenium technology. They had the best price according to pricewatch. Had all sorts of problems with my system being flaky. Sent them back for two replacements, and my system wouldn't even boot. Turns out they were altered chips, they had reprinted the numbers on the chip. Fortunatly I refused to pay it and my credit card company took it off my bill. This left a real bad taste in my mouth for intel. I ran all there utilities on these fake chips to find out what they were. There utilities always thought they were pII 450s. I woulda never known but I found others with the exact problems on deja news and a website detailing the problem. I am quite careful who I order from now. Best price doesn't mean much if they sell you crap. I also had a company that had a good track record, just not ship me a 1200 dollar monitor. Thank god my credit card company also took this off. These incidents have left a real sour taste in my mouth for web shopping.
