    Speaking as someone who doesn't know much about NDS, is there anything that NDS does that LDAP doesn't?

    Given the choice between something propriatary & something open, I know which way I'd lean.

    I personally prefer having my cookies unencrypted. I go in every so often and clean out the ones I don't want. If they were encrypted, then I couldn't do this.

    Besides this, most any company that I would do online business with has the integrity & knowledge to NOT store credit card information in my cookie. Very few do so.

    I agree, I've never seen any cookies storing cc numbers. I've seen userids, email addresses, zip codes, all sorts of stuff, but never cc numbers.

    If any website is storying cc numbers, or anything else which is sensitive, we should publicly scold them until they do. Anyone got URL's to check out?

    This is reminding me why I left the clutches of BT.

    Here in Canada, I can get a 1.5Mb ADSL for $39 (About 17 pounds). The US is even cheaper.

    JINI does use RMI, but they're not the same. It's like saying HTTP is the same as sockets because HTTP uses sockets.

    As for being a moving target because people are adopting it. I don't recall C going through such contortions when the universe was adopting it.

    I'm not terribly impressed with buzzwords used by startups anyway, they're mainly there to make the VC trolls happy.

    If it was truely portable, this wouldn't be an issue.

    I don't have to understand the context switching issues of various CPU's, because the OS takes care of that for me.

    I don't like Java either, but what do you mean, it isn't portable?

    I've found that the portability of Java is greatly exagerated. Taking a working Java app from an NT server to a different enviroment took several weeks. None of this was due to Microsoft, the app was written in 'pure' Java.

    In addition, you have to considere the rapid pace at which Java seems to evolve. Yesterday you should be using RMI, today JINI. Java 1.0 isn't compatable with Java 1.1, which isn't compatable with Java 2. All of this in a language which was released about 4 years ago?

    The OS the S/390 runs was unable to run on an S/390 until someone ported it, and was unable to take advantage of the features until someone coded in support.

    OS/390 wasn't ported. It's the latest version of IBM's mainframe OS's, which has roots going back into the 50's. (Earlier computers didn't really have OS's)

    Actually, they already can.

    OS/390 is UNIX 95 branded, and runs both the Domino webserver & also Apache.

    Or even better, if there is more work to do than a standard work week can handle, Get more people.

    Working overtime is fine for the occasional blip, but if there is a long term difference between the amount of work to do and the amount of time available then working overtime will not help. After a while, the quality of work decreases because your people are getting tired. Something that should take an hour takes 3 because of mistakes and lack of efficency.

    I happen to know a Canadian consultant who helped get an ISP in Iran onto the net.

    While people in the US are restricted, the rest of the world isn't. As there isn't any particular reason to connect directly to the US, and plenty of non-US/non-restricted equpiment to use.

    This is normal, because the CD drive is doing all the work. All a CD playing program does is to read the CD for track info, then tell the drive to start playing track 1. Unless you're pressing a control (next track, back, forward etc) then the CD just continues playing until it reaches the end.

    The "From ???@???" isn't part of the RFC822 message, it's added by the local delivery agent to convert a RFC822 message to mbox format.

    This isn't to be confused with the 'From:' header, which is of course part of the RFC822 message.

    What support will there be for running Koffice & the other apps under other window managers?

    Swappable windows managers is one reason why X has remained fresh all of these years, and I'd hate to be commited to one just to use a particular application.

    Another possible explination is that the OT VIII is bullshit, just like the levels which go before it.

    Can you control matter, space, energy & time? No, I didn't think so.

    Of course, having the belief that you can is ok. However, trying to sell courses as a 'science' without any scientific testing isn't. The many illegal acts of the Co$ is what the critics are protesting against.
