"Destroys" is a bit hyperbolic. Not that wear isn't a real thing, but with a good stylus, proper setup and a clean record it's pretty minimal. I have plenty of discs over 40 years old that have been played dozens of times with no discernable increase in noise or loss of signal.
Have you ever actually owned a record player?
