its still on the site..i dont know why its not showing up...see : http://slashdot.org/articles/00/01/10/0735230.shtm l...i dont know why it disappeared.
ive used DRDOS 6.x under Win31 and NovellDOS (formerly DRDOS 7.x) under win31. DRDOS was not like MSDOS, it had true multitasking and could multitask DOS programs together (try that under msdos) as well as better crash protection..i.e. i could unrecover from a freeze by pressing a particular key sequence and i did it many times. it also had the ability to kill a misbehaving DOS program through this mechanism..note that its all fairly clunky compared to unix and didnt work 100% of the time.
Thats great..especially since you guys are one of my only two backups of my code + website. Since i dont have a machine at home (and cant afford to run one), im pretty screwed if the websites go under (altho i occasionally burn a cdrom when i get access to a reader...which should help). One of the reasons a trust fund would help is that it would pay the bills for running the hardware indefinitely..i.e. off the interest earned, incase VA goes under. M-Net has been surviving on such a fund (total outlay to keep stuff running is around $800/month for m-net (couple of BSD boxes + 1 T/1 or something slower..which is prolly enough to tide over any bad periods)).
Hey guys, [a] whats your involvement going to be in the CSS cracking case ? And why are you involved anyway ? (granted that its something i'm relieved about -- a coupla billion dollar ipos v/s DVD consortium is a good thing) [b] And do you plan to continue sourceforge indefinitely ? i.e. do you plan to set up a trust fund for it or something that will ensure it sstays afloat even if something happens to VA ?
netware has a reputation for being a fileserver more than anything else -- and a DOS based product due to its crummy DOS based tools (netware 3,4 have em). netware also had serious problems with DoS attacks from (suprise, suprise) its own tools it shipped with the systems. The tools which allow you to masqurade PCs as servers can lead to disastrous DoS attacks when necessary.
The UK may have strict laws but the public TV stations show nudity freely after 10pm...check a few of those movie listings. Also cable p0rn is readily available with less restrictions than the US.
hmm..running code on untrusted machines is still a big problem and there will probably be no easy solution. Have you guys thought of downloading something like an applet type server compiled binary at client run time that plugs into the untrusted code and executes in a sandbox ? That may be mroe difficult to hack than the usual "download from our server and have time to hack it with a debugger" situation. you can also change the crack algorithm on the plug in for different contests without updating the old codebase.
the real problem is DoS attacks. The real reason behind not releasing the code is that the upgrade from 0.3 to 0.4 probably opened up a helluva lot of bugs that everyone can screw around with if they had the code. wanna bet that 1000's of script kiddies would crack into/. if the code was released ? im willing to bet theyre not releasing the code cos theyre *scared* of doing so.
In any event doing this is a bitch. The CLI tool may do as its told, but wrapping a GUI control around it means that you have to have some interprocess communication going on..i've tried to do this with a simple text parser which parses the output of the CLI but its not working as well as an integrated gui app would. problems with text being buffered and assorted crap (printf tends to buffer a lot) makes the gui tool unreliable at best.
nope. IMHO, the ip stack has not changed since 2.2..what we have in 2.4 is a replacement for the firewalling code (netfilter instead of ipchains), better NAT (1:1) and a huge change in the disk control code especially the SCSI layer. i dont think the ip stack needs a rewrite except for possibly lower latencies and i'll be impressed if carmack can come up with a stable stack thats faster than the one we currently have. ip stacks are waay different from writing games.
nah. its just that its widely regarded as boring and hard to code. lets face it - sitting in front of a monitor and coding is about the most fun thing i could think of -- and would probably fit everyone elses definition of boring as hell. Personally, i'd love to see more females get into coding..its a helluva lot better to have a more balanced male/female ratio. maybe then i can get a life...
mccain was one of the only senators to protest the FCC giving out airwaves free to the top 3 media companies..he even tried and failed to force a auction of the airwaves. i repect him for doing things like that (and sticking his arse out) even though he swims against the tide occasionally.
here ya go : http://slashdot.org/articles/99/04/14/1813222.sh tml i've been hunting for a quad mobo ATX case myself but cant find any except rackmounts cases+frames which are $3K for everything (including shipping, power etc)..thats about half my budget, so ill prolly make do with it.
ok smartass - do the math. [4] rackmount cases @ $300/case = $1200 [1] rackmount enclosure @ $1500/enclosure = $1500 Misc odds and ends (Rails, UPS, power distribution) = $300 Total: $3000. Now you try and find it cheaper.
Rackmount for 4 motherboards (ATX) + rackmount enclosure will run you to $3000. See www.hawkingtech.com for rackmount kits and stuff. buy.com is selling some hawking stuff cheap now...
nope..we had a bunch of the oem boards a while back with no problems. compaq generally sells shitty hardware see www.compaqsucks.com and buy gateway (which sells amd for a long time now)...or buy oem boards. did you check the memory ? it could be a memory problem..the cpu is generally the last component to fail and the memory the first.

check out http://prep.ai.mit.edu as well. BTW, this Hurd stuff came out in kt.linuxcare.com's kernel cousins a while back..nothing new here.
motion jpeg (MJPEG) is also pretty open right now and can be streamed.

anyone know what baryonic matter is ? see : http://www.kleinbottle.com/specs_for_nice_klein_bo ttl.htm..they claim its made from baryonic matter..
how and where did you get the url from ? is there any way to see stories b4 theyre posted ?

yup..but too much exposure can damage your eyes. careful with that UV lamp.

i doubt they will, but i'd love to see the stories anyway. hey rob -- how bout opening up the input queues ?
