Alright, so my post was a little bit "Me-too"ish, but I think that there was a valid point. Personally, I'm interested in finding out there's actually any decent anime out there, or if it is all just a bunch of crud like the stuff I've seen. I'd like to collect some ideas on what to go check out, and then, if it isn't worth it, opt out of seeing reports on it... Doesn't seem like too much to +ask, especially given the number of topics we now have, and the ease of adding them.
So, especially considering your response, everybody would be better off with a separate topic. People who don't want to see it don't, people who will bitch about seeing it won't see it, and those who wish to see it don't have to put up with those who bitch about it. Everybody saves time and bandwidth. Simple as that.
I still haven't seen any "high quality" animation in the Anime area... maybe I'm missing something...
I can only speak of the shows I skip over on TV, of course... Dragonball Z(?), Powerpuff girls, something about some sailor chicks who kick ass on a regular basis...
If somebody could point me at some decent looking stuff with a decent plot, I might be convinced to change my tune on this one... maybe I just haven't seen any "real" anime?
True, but musicians should be payed to perform, and can also make money of of merchandise (clothing, posters, etc). Most people performing in small clubs have a day job, or a S.O. with some income... if you can't support yourself, you might have to look into different work...
While I agree that this is the case, let's concoct a scenario here...
I buy a bookshelf radio/tape/[CD] system and a bunch of blank tapes at BestBuy. I go home, read all of the associated papers, and get it all set up. I listen to the radio and find a station I like. After several weeks of listening to the radio station, I tape a bunch of songs onto my cassettes, and give them out to friends, neighbors, small children, etc.. Even though ignorance is no defence, I read all of the information that came with my radio and blank tapes, listened to the radio for 24 hours a day for a week, and not once did anything tell me that it was wrong to do this.
"You may not retransmit yadda yadda without the express written consent of Major League Baseball or ESPN", but that disclaimer never occurred with any of the music or talk shows on the station. If they claim that this would be bad for these five things, but none of their other broadcasts mention copyright, does that mean that I have implied consent to do all of these things? Hell, I can sue if I am stupid and lose a finger because (I have no common sense) somebody doesn't write "don't stick your hand under this lawnmower, dumbass" with a big warning sticker... so if they don't actively protect their broadcast rights, then they are telling me 'have at it!'.
OTOH, I hope we never hear after every song "This song is the Intellectual Property of Sony Music corporation, yackity shmackity..."
>And if you're too stupid to recognize deja's links you're probably too stupid for Usenet and the Internet in general.
Unfortunately, there are several companies out there making sure that all the stupid people get a fair shake, too... Maybe the Internet should be limited use to those who have IQ ratings over a certain point... let all the people below that cobble together their *own* worldwide network! [/stupid idea]
"Bye, bye.... Miss... American Pie..." "drove my Chevy... to the... levy..." "but now I don't have to because of Priceline daht cahm" "great for... airline tickets, hotel rooms, coats borrowed from James Dean... anything..." "this'll be the day...... that I die... but I'll die happy, because of Priceline daht cahm... yeah" [hired audience claps]
You know that Shatner actually has an album out of this talking songs crap...
Just get SCSI. Gets rid of your IDE bottleneck, performance can be as good as you'll ever find, and it is widely available. Not as flexible as 1394 (no hot plug and all that), but a good solution for drives.
Firewire is really neat stuff (tough to get for PCs, though), but I really haven't seen a lot for it except for Sony digital cameras.
>People that insist on having SCSI CD-ROMS and Writers are just throwing away their money.
To some degree, you could argue this point, but my UltraPlex Wide(40x) can rip digital audio heaps faster than any of the 52x IDE drives out there... in fact, my Plextor 12/20 can outpace them on most things. The quality of the SCSI CD drives is far superior to the IDE drives, too. They are made for critical tasks, and sever towers, not just for Joe Blow who doesn't want to pay more than $50 at BestCircuitCompBuyCityUSA. They work, are built better (much less noise/vibration), they don't quit working nearly as fast, and they have better performance and warantees. Yes, they cost more, and for some people it doesn't matter, but for some it really does.
You would probably argue that an MP3 sounds the same as a CD, too...
> DMA (direct memory access) supposedly makes a huge difference in CPU usage.
True, DMA does help, but it doesn't solve some of the most basic problems, and if one is using an OS that doesn't allow/assign priority levels (95/98), then it doesn't matter much.
My CD-R program uses less than 3% of the CPU on a Celeron300 @ 450... the drive transfers take up about 4% CPU. I can't even do a *read* in UDMA for 4%, much less a read and a write (and I certainly can't post a read request and write some data while waiting for it).
10krpm SCSI -> Plextor Writers is the way to go (or stream directly from a UW Plextor CD reader).
Personal experience has soured me against IDE/ATA/DMA for some things - I do have a couple of huge IDE drives for mass storage - but for most, it's not worth it.
Note that the HP660C (and a couple others, including the 600C run with the same driver as the 550C, and work Just Fine(TM). You lose a little bit of the extra capabilities, but I've never had a problem with mine, FWIW.
Were you runnning on an IDE chain? The speed of your drives and the lack of function in the ATA protocol is a big problem. Too much processor intervention, no disconnect abilities... SCSI is far superior in this respect, and is well worth the price premium.
I dissagree - is may be the tenth in the line of increasingly unstable MacOS versions (this one should be a marked improvement, though), but it should be pronounced mak-oh-ess-eks. It just sounds better. Besides, the letter 'X' is just cool by virtue of being 'X'...
I've watched it once or twice... moderately amusing for about 4 minutes each half hour... I certainly wouldn't call it quality animation, though...
Ouch... a little bit of a nerve there...

Not a slow day, just some slow grepping...
Oh, it's easy... if I wrote it, it's almost definitely very bad haiku... hence the '?' ;-)

Yeah, it would be nice to be able to block this stuff as easily as blocking Jon Katz (etc...)
I still don't see how this fits in with News for Nerds, Stuff that Matters... Poor animation that matters?
>Example: A dollar buys me two dollars
oooh, where? I promise I won't tell...
You meant a dollar buys you two apples, right?

Oh well...
FireWire Can Be Fun
Expandable and Easy

I doubt that this header will be noticed by 99% of the world (everyone who doesn't specifically look for it on Deja), and so it won't really matter...
They could put a little box on the side, top or bottom - Related Links... hmmm... sounds like a good idea...
Well, they mentioned the 'x-no-productlinks: yes', but I like your choice far better...
how 'bouts: x-leave-my-freaking-post-alone-you-dirty-whores: yes
A little dramatic, but it might be effective 8^)
Maybe it's just time to default every news reader to x-no-archive: yes... that would be interesting...
Nah, we'd still drive our VWs and Audis...
And I'm sure that UUnet would qualify as a fairly large service provider...

Matrox. Plain and simple.

Ah, but it's a new Beetle body (more plastic)... and it happens to be a Golf, not a Gulf...
Nice cut and paste job from #14...
