Yes we would. Remember, the early good roads movement was for the benefit of bicycle traffic, auto traffic was a secondary consideration. The good roads, built for bicycles, is what enabled the auto, not the other way around.

I am a teacher and have been for several years. I can tell you that the pay thing is a myth. I have an MBA and I tried getting a job outside of teaching this summer. What I discovered was that I had two options, selling stuff that was not a very good deal for the buyer, or jobs that paid lass than $10 per hour.
I just can not get my heart around hustling people, and I am not interested in the idea of near minimum wage for no benefits or pension. So, guess what, this fall I go back to teaching.
