I think there is hope. It's about Dunbar's number. Wikipedia say this about it:

...it measures the "cognitive limit to the number of individuals with whom any one person can maintain stable relationships".

This number is dictated by the "volume of the neocortex region of their brain" and it indicates the number of "relantionships" that a person can manage without problems. The number is 150 BTW. This is a very simplistic summary and you should read the Wikipedia article.

Now, some people are applying this when creating and managing companies in order to not have the problems that the big corp. have. See http://www.scottweisbrod.com/index.php/?p=92 for a nice summary.

I learned about it after reading Malcom Gladwell's book "The Tipping Point". It's a good book BTW.

I haven't had the need for java yet and I will not learn it unless I have to (e.g., for work), or it is a standard not controlled by a single "for profit" entity. If two or more companies get together and I have the time, then I may take a look because of curiosity.

"WE DO" not control the government. Government is controlled by special interests.

Wrong! We DO control the government. You only have to see the amount of time, money, and effort spent in the elections by the big parties for marketing.

Special interest groups can only steer the gov so much. The rest is up to us.

The problem is: Who's controlling us? And I'm not talking about aliens and company. We are, as society, short sighted. As Caleb Carr puts it:

This leads to a society in which each member is increasingly concerned with the satisfaction of his or her own material appetites, and less and less concerned with the philosophical problems and principles that underlie the successful creation and maintenance of a civil society.

We expect everybody take responsibility for his or her actions without us taking responsibility for ours. By this I mean, as a computer user: Do I leave the monitor on all night for no apparent reason? Do I drink 6, 4, or 1 can of cola instead of water even if I know that my body will suffer if I drink cola and I may pay later in life (kidney shutdown)?

As you see, every action has an effect. And your small individual actions will shape our society decisions. So, yes, we DO control the government, but we DO NOT control ourselves.

I found that the best way for me to keep out strees is to exercise. Specially really early in the morning. I do some cardio, then I swim and finally I go to the sauna. By the end I don't feel my muscles anymore but my mind is crisp and ready for action.

If you can go camping at least once a year that will help you alot. Remember NOT to bring your cell.
