  1. alpha processor on Answers About The New NOAA Massive Linux Cluster · · Score: 1

In response to the In the beginning... question, Greg points out that "Compaq designed the Alpha processor". Let's give credit where it is due. Compaq bought the Alpha processor which was originally designed by Digital Equipement Corporation. The Alpha was the successor to the highly popular VAX. I'm pretty sure that Compaq also acquired the compilers from DEC as well.

  2. lost sales on Napster Hurts Album Sales? · · Score: 1

This goes back to the same old argument of something that is lost vs. something you never had. Companies like Micro$oft claim LOST revenues due to piracy, in reality they never would have sold to the pirates because their prices are too high. The music industry is now claiming LOST CD sales due to napster, but most people will just do WITHOUT the CD due to the high price. There is a movement, I understand to lower CD sales and it will be interesting to see if the music industry claims GAINED sales due to that (if it ever happens). I doubt they will.

  3. Crackdown on security holes on Office Assistant: Yet Another Security Hole · · Score: 2

Micro$oft should form a new unit to look into such matters. Call it the Security Hole Investigation Team. BG: "Better turn the Office Assistant into S.H.I.T."

Here is what we have been lowered to

"derived its independent economic value from not being generally known to the public "

With this sterling logic, a doctor could sue you for putting on a band-aid when you should have gone to the hospital instead.

  5. real meaning of 2000 on End of the World · · Score: 1

It's a speck of dust in a very large storm. Our existence is totally miniscule, but still significant. I want to shake the hell out of people that think our tiny existence on this very small rock somehow has the gumption to show arrogance. Our differences are very minor and we should be happy that other humans can be different, yet the same. There is no need to have prejudice based on race, gender, sexual preference, mental capabilities, etc... It is easy to look at our differences but it is hard to see how we are so tiny and fragile. I believe humans will grow and evolve to more compassionate and intelligent beings. I only hope we have the perception to see it and pull it off.

THEY decide what is wrong. That's the frightening part. Who are THEY? The silent rulers who are above the laws that THEY made.

  8. dec albatross on Compaq's CEO Resigns · · Score: 1

Don't misunderstand me, I cut my first teeth on a VAX, but DEC is a huge albatross for Compaq. DEC has been losing big money for years now. Compaq was arrogant to think they could turn that around. The CFO must be stupid, stupid, stupid for pushing numbers like 31 cents per share.
