  1. Re:TSM on What Software Do You Use for Unix Backups? · · Score: 1

Perhaps you can clear up a possible misconception of mine here --

I've always been under the impression that TSM essentially does one full backup for each system, and from that point all backups all incremental. Meaning that performing a full restore involves touching many, many tapes. If this is truly the case, I don't see how TSM can even be considered anything close to a real enterprise backup solution..

  2. Offline synchronization on Can OWA Replace the Outlook Client and the VPN? · · Score: 2, Informative

I use OWA with work on a pretty regular basis, but my main problem with using it as a primary means to access email is its lack of offline synchronization. I'm a consultant, and as such I tend to travel a lot, which means I am often without connectivity. I'm sure the same thing goes for travelling sales people, executives, etc.

Internet connectivity is still not ubiquitous, but as long as you've synched your laptop, you at least have your old email, and can compose new emails, queueing them up until you have a chance to synchronize again. Given that email tends to be one of the primary means of communication when working in large, geographically disperse teams, having offline access to old emails can be a lifesaver at times (say, when you're onsite with no Net access and need to make an emergency phone call, but the contact info happens to be in an email somewhere).

Other than that, OWA is usable, but not great.. In my experience, I've had formatting issues, and the occaisional IE crash. Of course, Outlook crashes too, so there's not really much difference there..

  3. Re:Would by zealots, for zealots be better? on IDC Analyst Dan Kusnetzky Explains the Numbers · · Score: 2

Lotus Notes and Novell Groupwise are the only two products with similar funcionality that I've been able to find. I've been stuck with Exchange for about a year and a half now, and I absolutely agree with nyet -- its stable, as long as you don't touch it. Try upgrading/changing/restoring anything, and you're screwed. And Exchange provides so little administrative feedback that its damn near impossible to fix the problems that come up after you touch it.

Notes seems pretty decent. The Domino mail server runs on Solaris (not sure about linux) and seems pretty straightforward. I've worked with an older version of it a while ago, and it was definitely a lot more predictable than Exchange. I'd switch to it in a heartbeat -- Just have to get management approval first.

If anyone can come up with any alternatives (free?) to Exchange/Notes/Groupwise, I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd be interested in hearing about them. Anything that does what your typical "groupware" does -- email, scheduling, and contact management I think are the biggies.

Hey guys. I figured this article would show up here today.. I happen to work for the company that is developing these new vending machines. I can't really say much about the technology (NDA), but the machines are in fact NOT designed to raise prices when the temperature rises. I don't know how/why that got out into the press, but it really was blown out of proportion..
