My 486 66mhz CPU can decode mp3s, but only by mixing both channels into one mono channel. Thanks to mpg123. I do it on a 486, because I can. I also have a K6-450, and I do 99.9% of my work there.;)
I don't know if it's alredy been said, because I'm quite lazy and not going to read all 330 comments but-
When I purchase a > $70 dollar app, I would like to have a nice thick manual/ref guide to go with it. It's mondo easy to search through- if it's properly indexed. I believe that part of the [inflated] price now adays is simply for printing the manual. W/o a printed manual, i believe it gives people further incentive to illigally copy software. Many Newbies copy, and then are stuck w/o a reference guide.
So, in a nutshell, I expect manuals with all software I buy. in fact, I believe all softare (OS's) should come with a PROGAMMER's MANUAL (hint, hint, Microsoft), therefore advanced users can take full advantage of features that common users will not use.
It'd be interesting to put a hook into the code for slash that translates on-the-fly. Then Slashdot could really annoy all users by piping the entire site through/usr/games/pig. on a more practical note, if translation software gets better, Slash could translate on-the-fly to languages besides english.
Unfortunatly... the MBTA Commuter rail doesn't run from providence on saturday/sunday. You'd have to take a taxi all the way to the South Attleboro Station.
In fact this [sitting on classes and not paying] is quite possible @ my college. But don't expect to get a degree. or any certification that you've been there.
VMware does _not_ support midi. It says so in the documentation. It'll support wave just fine, but You have to install an audio driver w/ the midi support disabled.
I have the same hardware, and the same problem. If some one could could modify Timidity (a software savetable for linux/win32) to capture/dev/midi or whatever, I'd be all set.
DNS is several many years old (at least by internet age) This has been available to anyone who's wanted to use it. Obviously the creator of the DNS spec thought of a similar situation. What these people are doing, in my opinion is discovering that you can "fix" a computer with a hammer, and patenting that.
putty is nice. Simple, doesn't do port forwarding, just does ssh-terminal connections interface is brain dead, Source available, and it' only a ~210k binary (unextracted- run it right from the floppy) http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty. html
Most apps use the same keys- Some rouge apps decide that they're better, and use their own keys. (When I program In Windows, I try to stick to the common 'Standard)
But perhaps we need something else. Perhaps We need to Ditch X, all these WMs and start from scratch (It sounds really drastic-but it seems like the only way) How about an Open-Source API that's STANDARD throughout all Platforms, configurations, etc, Handles Printing, graphics, 3d Stuff, etc. We can take the good from X windows (client/server, remote display), the good stuff from windows (there _is_ good stuff, like the componentized archetecture- The registry is a beast, but it does it's job well.). The current state of Xwindows/Linux is managable, but if we want to add users to the linux userbase, stuff like this has to be very simple to do.
I'm a US citizen, (and unaware of UK laws) but if a warrant is issued, isn't it normally standard procedure that if the person refuses to be searched, they'll be jailed? I'm not supporting people unlawfully rummaging through my data, but isn't this just an extention of an already existing law?
If I recall coreectly, The IBM AS/400 uses a layered, object-oriented Hardware approach. This lets them put Java VMs, Intel VMs, as well as Native As/400 apps all on the same CPU, running simultanously. All VMs go throught the abstraction layer, which in turn access the the Core Hardware.
This is nearly impossible- due to the laws of conservation of energy. A lot of energy would be lost in just making the light, and cannot be recovered to produce more energy. You're describing a perpetual energy machine- which would be cool, but unfortunatly very impossible.
to get to the Debugger, press [CMD] + [RESET] (or if your mac has the programmer's interrupt switch, press it on the side of your box) The default Mac Debugger is pretty arcane... You might want get your hands on 'MacsBug'
As for the other CLI, I have no clue. (MPW kinda-sorta makes it's on CLI, but i don't think that's what he's talking about)
The point is that we, as a community, don't need more users; we need more developers. Linux users should aspire to become developers, and existing developers should aspire to use their skills on Linux. If we slowly give that up and let corporations handle it for us, then we're also giving up control of Linux, GPL notwithstanding.
Linux developers won't give up. Developers are also users who would probably want to use the free/Open Source apps that fellow developers use. And as long as Free/Open Source developers develop an excellent product at no or little cost, then corprations contributing to that market would have to make a knockout app to compete, or GPL it.

You know- Every onece in a while I want to give my computer A0 Certification...

That's just for the Friday event. Saturday is an "All ages" event.

Just curious... What encoding is this?
How interesting.... the Linux penguin in underwear. "I'm too sexy for my linux..."
I'd also like to add that RH 5.2's Netscape had a default start page. Somewhere in /usr/doc
