I have this Lamy Safari fountain pen I got for christmas some years ago (with my name on it).
It is a pleasure to bring forth when others are writing with disposables; it being classy, clean in design and working flawlessly. It also feels much like the Wacom Graphire stylus, which I also happen to like.
Cartridges are quite easy to find once you realize that Pelikan 4001 cartridges fits with just a little bit more insertion force.
I can't see why the authorities would stop that net - after all, LANs such as the one described aren't _that_ unusual in Umeå.
Accually, Umeå Energi (the net owner) is digging down fiber all across the city to be able to run fiber to _any_ household in a not-so-distant future.
You could always modulate data just like a modem does and then record that on the disc.
It won't fit alot of data on the disc this way though. Some 20kB/s would perhaps, but then you might encounter problem with that lossy ATRAC compression.
Newer CRT's don't radiate more than the wires we've all got running through our walls. and that too is significantly less than the 60W light bulb you've got hanging over your head, emmitting a faint glow.
Generally I think that patents are "Somewat holy".
They are for something. They have a meaning.
But. 3dfx has now long used these chips for consumer products without NVidia yelling at them.
If this had been really serious I think NVidia could have found out about it earlier.
Now it just looks like they are trying to cause trouble for 3dfx.
I think that this is a good way to start nestling up all those scary "big-brother's-watching-you" things introduced in the recent history of world and cold wars.
If they would find out that I my whole life have been watched by US Gov. I'd prefer to get to know it than to have the situation continued.
(reply will follow in english too:-) Lycka till med att få in internet i en villa för det priset! Iofs så ingår sådan internetuppkoppling i hyran på en del lägenheter. Är det gratis då?
Good luck connecting a cottage to the Internet at that amount of money! Btw, such connections are sometimes included in the rent. Is that internet for free?
Recently I got som information from www.telia.se (in swedish, yes. So what?) It is said to cost 200SEK a month(~23USD) at a speed of 512kb/s *at least* 95% of the time. If more speed is demanded they could speed it up later on (no more info there?)
I guess it's quite a good offering:-) Pity they don't start to connect people before the end of this summer:-(
I think this unit is a great step forward for mankind, *but*: You said that you suspected a harddrive failure on a box running Linux, without tou having any possibilities to exchange the hard drive, right?
Wouldn't it have been much better if one could stick a 18GB 3.5" scsi drive into the back of the unit making it possible to store *alot* more data (movies, talk shows or what-so-ever)?
I've always whanted to store data on MiniDiscs. Think of it: 1)7x7cm (2x2 inch.) could store 100-150MB worth of data* 2)The discs come in a plastic case which is (mostly) dust and scratch-proof 3)They can be read/written using the same technique as usual M/O discs.
*) Iv'e heard that MiniDiscs uses a compression algorithm similar to mp3 (lossy), altough 4:1 not 12:1, makeing it able to hold 650/4=162.5MB (~150).
My idea on open source is perhaps differ somewhat from yours. If we are to be free then no one should force us on a special track just beacuse its "the current way" to do it. If NVidia and/or other companies has got better ways of doing hw.accel. 3D on Linux and other free OSs, then why try to stop them? The only concern I see in this matter is their choice of releasing a binary-only driver, as this makes it very hard to run their hardware on other platforms than Linux/i386. I find your choice of words a bit strange, especially the use of "free# and "must" in the same sentence:
...the open source paradigm - that the "road" which all users must use...
The hard part of all this is in my opinion that the maintenance and porting of their (NVidias) drivers will be hard if/when they go out of bussines.

20kB/s *1024kB/MB * 74min/disc * 60s/min = 86.7MB/disc
Add stereorecording to that and you could fit som 150MB on one disc. Would take 74min to store/retrieve though.

Ever mad a resistor blow up?
I got one emmitting a nice green smoke a couple of months ago, while building a power amplifier.
Fun!
