its called "techno" - though this is not exclusive, as Punk, and Classical are also "Geek" favorites.

and its completely unacceptable to mainstream music interests. Theres no Depressing lyrics, no way to control the masses. Hell, most music that is put out is downright intelectually insulting.

We do create music... lots of it... but its music that you have to sit there and think about... sit there and really listen to. It isnt a quick 3 minute NSync piece of crap. Its music that was crafted with beautiful patterns that challenge the mind.

Go find that in your next Bacstreet Boys album.

well ... I havent read any studies on it, but if you can get someone to spend time acquiring a skill in a way that they enjoy and challenges them, it should make sense that they will eventually learn how to do stuff on their own.

The classic games were an excercise in exploring the game creator's minds, and by doign that, you learned how to think like he did, liek a programmer...

  10. Do they understand? on House To Hold Hearing On Napster · · Score: 1

The answer is and unfortunate, yes, they do understand what the internet is capable of, and are scared stiff. Peer to Peer networking eliminates the need for an expensive physical distribution network. That means that no one has to go to the record companies/movie studios/publishing houses to have their artwork shared. Heck, they could have their thoughts shared, or their ideas and values... Instead of having them imposed from above. I mean, what if young teenage pop icons actually thought it was OK to have sex? Or that drugs may be not all that bad? or... maybe someone will promote a music that is truly positive and uplifting instead of depressing and debilitating... If Congress tries to do this, the law WILL be struck down in court, as a violation of : 1. Free Press 2. Free Speech Why first Freedom of the Press? Because everyone with a computer is NOW a publisher. If I publish a song/treatise/poem/whatever on my computer and allow for it to be "shared", then I am a publisher, and therefore I am the press. I now have the power to reach millions of people, just like the traditional media outlets. They are scared of losing the power that they now have. Like other truly world-changing events, no one can predict the changes that will come from this "new" invention of the internet. Look at the Printing Press - such as "A Modest Proposal", The Industrial Revolution, The Prevalence of the Automobile, Radio, Televison - no one, and I mean no one could predict the profound impact that these technologies have had on our society, and with every one of them, the current powers that were, were diluted, but not without a fight. The constitution does not just apply to big companies, established media outlets or big govt. It is truly meant to PROTECT us from them, because Alexander Hamilton knew that there are always groups that will erode these god-given and natural freedoms for their own cause, in the name of "protection" or "for the good of all"

  11. spot the troll on FTC Settles With Big CD Makers-Cheaper CDs Coming? · · Score: 1

ok... i'll bite on this troll

THe cost to manufactur a cd is significantly less than it is to manufacture a tape, let alone a good old vinyl LP (mmm... I love vinyl).

THey use the same master recordings, so there isnt any increase in marginal cost, the cost to produce each additional unit.

so then the question becomes why on earth do CD's cost $4-6 more than they're cassette counterparts?

In the late 80's the records companies phased out vinyl in favor of cd's. Supposedly, there was a higher production cost for CD's at this time, and the recording industry being the nice guys that they are, they passed the increase onto us, and promised to lower CD prices once the production costs fell...

Well, production costs fell, but the CD prices didnt... go figure...

and as for lowering sales... well... the recording industry had an 8% increase last year... one of their best years ever. So there is no evidence that there was a negative effect from MP3's...

The Recording industry should learn from the software industry on this one...

A friend of mine's father is a VP at MickeySoft, and the unofficial stance at MS is that low-level non-commercial "pirating" i.e. you giving your friend a copy of Windows or whatever, actually is beneficial to MS in the long run.

As in - you're gonna end up buying SOMETHING from them eventually....

Now the large scale bootleg software that is SOLD... there is a problem with that...

  22. Its not that its DIGITAL - its about control on National Association of Broadcasters Sues RIAA · · Score: 2

its that its "new" and the recording industry cant control it.

There are no more insanely high priced barriers to entry, so that means that the companies that have been the only ones that could afford to produce, and distribute music no longer are the only ones that can afford to publish music.

Now, the controlled distribution channels are beginning not to matter... You can slap a fairly professional track using a multitude of tools, put it on MP3, and then get the track out without investing any money in making physical copies.

That scares the heck out of the media industry, because it cuts them out of the loop, so they dont get any money.

DOnt believe for a second that this is about sales of existing works or "piracy" its about control. period.

    Actually, its lower than that.

Why so low? Only half of the citizens that are eligible to vote are registerred. SO we're down to 50%. And less than half of those registerred vote. So we're at 25% now.

Winning a two-way race now makes it so the winner needs only 12.5% to win the election. ANd the real scary thing here, is that the 50% voter turnout is TOO HIGH of an estimate.

so there are enough "of us" to make a difference. How many people do you think that we can motivate to go and vote based on certain issues.

Enough to be noticed. And felt, and influence events.

we must stop being apathetic and start getting involved. It is possible for the system to work, we just need to take the controls. It wont even be that hard...
