  1. Are SW Managers going to be certified too? on Should Programmers Be Certified? · · Score: 1

My experience teaches me that most of the problem isn't at the developer level, but at the manager level. Sure there are some marginal to incompetent programmers out there, but it seems that the bigger problem is management. In fact I've heard from many developers who've been in the industry of a long time that warnings were made in the 70's and 80's about the Y2K issue and management ignored the developers request to avoid the problem. And who is management usually going to blame when projects fail? Rarely will it be themselves...

  2. Less Gun Control not More! on Why Kids Kill · · Score: 1

It's actually been proven in case after case that where there is a higher gun ownership per-capita, crime rates are lower. I guarantee that if all the students and teachers in the school were packing lead. This situation would not have happened or at least fewer fatalities would have occurred. I guarantee that if or when an armed assailant breaks into your house in the middle of the night that you'd wish you had a semi-automatic handgun to defend yourself and/or your family instead of a bolt action or a baseball bat.

As for crushing commercial software... How do you propose for me to pay my rent? I'm a professional programmer, paid by one of those "EVIL" commercial software companies. I agree that Open Source Software is a good thing, but if you use it to make my means of supporting myself non-existant, I'll fight OSS tooth and nail. And don't tell me that I can sell documentation or support. I'm not a technical writer and don't want to deal with clueless people full time. There are those who enjoy writing and helping users, but I prefer designing and coding code.

You're confusing Patent Law with Copyright Law and they are two separate (though somewhat related) issues. To create a PGPL would not Patent anything. To put the PGPL tag on anything wouldn't stop anyone from patenting your idea and suing you for not paying them royalties. To fix the problem with current patent law requires political action and educating politicians what is wrong with current U.S. (or your favorite country) Patent law. The problem is that current patent law was designed to protect inventors during the Industrial Revolution and hasn't been updated to protect the inventor in the Information Revolution.

Oh well, more time for Linux 2.2.x to take over the world!!!

  6. How is this possible ? on More on Sightsound.com's Patent · · Score: 1

As I remember they were patenting "the method" (i.e. their method) of allowing people to pay for music or video and then receiving a download of the content the customer paid for.

  7. Read the Patents... They just down apply... on More on Sightsound.com's Patent · · Score: 1

Both patents only apply to their method, not existing ones. So the idea that this company has a patent on buying stuff with SSL based tech and uploading the music (or video) via HTTP based tech is ludicrous (sp.?) You can't patent a pre-existing algorithm or a general (pre-existing) idea...
