i definitly agree that empire was the best of the original trilogy because of its darkness and not so happy ending. i heard lucas say on ET that episode II would be a love story (anakin and amidala) and that episode III would be a dark serious film (anakin's transformation into vader). so, it looks like the best is still yet to come!
Actually, Lucas originally wrote the story that we know now as episodes IV through VI, but, since that was all too big to make one movie out of, he cut the last half off and just made "a new hope" out of it. He set the last half aside and got himself exclusive sequel rights, then added to it and made two more movies. (in case youre wondering, i got this info from before the movies in the collector's edition boxed set that came out just before the remakes)
