Four score years ago I was grilled on ISAM and BDAM for a junior programming job.. I passed. When I got there I found our they had a DBMS that used ISAM and BDAM, but the programmers only access the files through the DBMS. Totally useless questions.
I have designed the architecture on systems highly reliant on technologies I only had a moderate understanding, No architect can be an expert on all the technologies in any type of system except the most trivial systems.
When a "dumb terminal" was the height of technology I worked with a programmer with no arms, another legally blind, a third was a quadriplegic.
When you hire, give everyone a chance.
