This bug was introduced recently in https://github.com/openssl/ope... to add support for "In certain situations the server provided certificate chain may no longer be valid" This bug doesn't affect libressl, boringssl, or vigortls.
Showing advertisements is classified as running a commercial business. I don't think I would want my personal details divulged just for showing advertisements to cover hosting costs.
StartSSL has already been doing this. I believe Let's Encrypt real goal is to make the deployment and unkeep easier?
StartSSL offers free certificates for non-commercial use only, and they charge more than a certificate from another CA to revoke your certificate ($24.90 ATM).
This nuisance can be disabled by linking "notelemetry.obj" though this shouldn't be necessary but just Microsoft things.
