As usual, there is no indication of when the line will actually be up and running properly, nor does anyone here have a clue about these "displays" the article mentions. Hell, nobody I know had any clue about the last fare hike.
The NYC MTA is a joke. They run empty trains for training purposes at peak rush hour, and you can stand around on a platfrom for a half hour without anyone informing you that the line is down. Local trains frequently fly by inexplicably stalled express trains. Then there are the yellow diesel cars that spew smoke into the tunnels, and of course those oh-so-funny motormen that love to blow the very loud horn after the thing's already in the station, thrashing everyone's nerves even more.
Lighting to restrooms underneath is provided by fiber optic paths from the white LEDs in the giant display above.
That's not what I read. My understanding is that the light is natural sunlight, collected by a device that follows the course of the sun by using a motor powered by its own PV cell. Where did you get the above quote? Did you just decide to make it up?
But almost every/. story has some editorial comment appended to it, sometimes a dig (often at anything non-OSS), sometimes an ostensibly (and completely unnecessary) discussion-provoking question... It's a great site, I read it all the time, but it's not exactly tailored for adults. I try to just accept it, although I often share your reaction.
My love of the Mac has nothing to do with ease of use. I have been using Linux at home and at work for several years, and I desperately want to replace my home machine with a Mac. Why? Because I miss QuickTime, Shockwave, Kensington Turbo Mouse drivers, at least two browsers from which to choose, professional multimedia creation software, and, more than anything else, that warm, fuzzy feeling I get just moving a cursor around. The feel is so very, very different. No amount of tweaking X or GTK or E has even come close. I love getting in front of my friends' Macs and just clicking on stuff. I know many of you have no idea what I'm talking about, and don't really care. That's all right. I think most Mac users understand.
Why is QuickTime so rarely mentioned in these kinds of lists? All of my acquaintances working in professional multimedia creation export almost exclusively to quicktime. QT4 is now the gold standard, and is unavailable for Linux (AFAIK).
Could have fooled me. What exactly did they launch, when the L train is still unavailable for much of the line on weekends?
