    The same argument can be made of guns. There are some legal uses but most of the uses are illegal.

    What prevents anyone from praying to their god now?
    School can't sanction prayer, can't foce people to pray, can't provide money and space for ORGANIZED prayer but it can nto prevent someone from saying hail mary before a test either.

    It's much easier to configure and use then apache is.
    I used to use it and I liked it alot but the price kept going up and both iis and apache were free. I never upgraded from 1.x.

    Like most americans you seem to be confused as to how the law works. The law does not work the same for everybody. The intent of the DMCA was to make more money for some corporations any other use of that law will not be held up in court.

    The congress critter as well as any other corporation is not answerable to this or any other law only you are. Do you know why? It's because they have more money then you.

    By non cheating I mean actually usable database database configurations as opposed to database configurations which are designed to score high on this test and are not usable in real world situations.

    Weather or not clustering is good depend on the end result. If after you have acieved your cluster your software is usable as intended then it's good.
    The problem with microsfts idea of a clustered database is that the cluster is not usable in the real world. The MS cluster only serves one purpose and that is to score high on the TPC tests it is not usable in the real world.

    The TPC orginally disqualified the results if you remember. Then after pressure from MS they published the specs with an * (figuratively speaking) they created an entirely new category of MS and dumped the results there.

    Also note that the top performing clustered result costs about a million dollars more then the non clustered result. Paying more for a useless database configuration is an exersize that only a PHB would undertake.

    Sinse the US can't seem to go more then five or six years without bombing another country you really can't rely on countries like afghanistan or iraq. What you need is some "sacred cow" countries. Some that come to mind.

    Israel: will never ever be bombed by the US but may be subject to political pressure because they are so dependent on us for money. Even so they tend to be obstinate.

    Taiwan: A cruicial island and a political hot potato lots of bandwidth too.

    China: too big and scary also a potential huge market they certainly will not be bullied. Hong Kong already has infrastructure.

    Turkey: Crucial middle east country but like the israelis they are subject to political pressure.

    Russia: They need the money and still have nukes would make a great country.

    India, pakistan: Bombing them would cause all hell to break loose.

    South Korea: Untouchable!

    Khazakistan: Lots of oil, lots of nukes (leftover from the UUSR). Big country needs money great place for something like this.

    There is a major difference here though. It's not like the magazine messed up and mis tuned the thing. When they found out that sql2K was half as slow as sql7 THEY CALLED UP MS AND ASKED FOR HELP!. Then ms and them worked for more then a week to fix the problem but they could not.

    They gave MS lots of opportunity to fix the problem but the problem was unfixable. IMHO they had a duty to report this to their readers.

    Interesting link. According to them the non cheating benchmarks are dominated by oracle and db/2. Considering that db/2 is actually cheaper then sqlserver 2000 for most of the common situations not a bad deal.

    BTW the top spot (IBM and Oracle) cost $9,560,594.00 who in the open source world is going to spend that kind of money for a test.

    Most databases have some sort of an executive that runs scheduled jobs. It would be trivial to implement something which fires off an email message or beeps somebody when a disk is using 90% of it's space. I really don't see why this is such a big deal.

    You make some excellant points

    Ff you buy the SQL2K/W2K combo you will have to upgarde both your dabase server and your OS at the same time.
    The cost of the operating system should be added to the cost of the database server for a true comparison.
    Oddly this makes oracle price competitive in most circumstances how funny is that?

    If the program is expecting to use some resource it ought to check that the resource is available. This applies for anything. A program ought not to crash because some file it expected is missing and it ought not to crash because there is no more room on the drive. Seems simple to me.

    Extemely stable as in a 74 pinto is extrememly stable compared to a 72 pinto.

    Check out interbase. Great GUI tools, great SP language, fast, stable, sql92 compliant and open source. It runs on windows and linux.

    It depends on your app.

    Lots of writes postgres is faster then mysql.
    Lots of selects with comples queries postgres is faster.
    lots of selects with no joins mysql is faster.
