    Under Linux in 1024x768 mode, the toolbar is substantially increased in size by the ad banner. Even with all other toolbars turned off, that one toolbar took up as much room as the Mozilla navigation toolbar, personal toolbar, and prefs toolbar. Also, Mozilla is plenty fast on my machine (500Mhz K6-2 w/ 184MB RAM), and it hasn't crashed in months.

    I don't object to the Opera people trying to make a living. I'm just saying that I don't choose to use their product because there are free alternatives that work better for me.

    I'm afraid I look at plenty of ads already, and I'm not going to pay $40 for a browser when I already have a very fast and much more standards compliant browser for free.

    The thing is, Linux doesn't really "support" gaming that well either. DRM is a hack that allows things ran in the API layer to access the hardware directly. It's a nit, but I had to pick it :)

    A new version of OpenGL was just released last month. And if you use OpenGL and other cross-platform libs, porting shouldn't take much more than some tweaking and a recompile.

    Excellent point - a brief google search found this page, a summary of the performance of ext2, ext3, jfs, xfs, vfat, and reiserfs.

    Prior to the release of Potato, potato was frozen and woody was unstable. Since the release of potato, unstable has been given the permanent codename sid and woody currently testing and will be until after its release. Then, stable will be woody and testing will be whatever the next codename is (andy?).

    That has to be one of the stupidest things I've ever seen. What happens when you're on a 56k modem and you have to download copies of the Linux kernel, glibc, X, and GNOME in order to install a 40k utility program? Besides, it's pointless when you already have apt to automatically download and install dependencies.

    gconftool is'nt a Galeon thing. It lets you access the gconf database, which is like the GNOME version of the Windows registry.

    What kind of Linux do you use? Every Linux distro I've ever seen does an automatic fsck if it's necessary. Besides, that'll be irrelevant when we move to ext3/ReiserFS.

    Konqueror has a similar feature, and Galeon has "smart bookmarks" that let you design your own search engine toolbar. My Galeon toolbar has searches for Google, Freshmeat, packages.debian.org, and my own hard drive. It's cool.

    Altavista does this to a much larger extent than Google. Google has one or two clearly marked text-only ads. Altavista is covered with banner adds and links to its "partners".

    Heh. That's funny. Installing Windows XP, I'm getting an estimated disk space of 1.6 gigs. That would be *1000* times the size of the Java VM. Which does much more than wrap Windows calls.
