I started my programming in mIRC (an IRC client for Windows). The language was simple and I was able to whip up things such as powerful bots to run my IRC server, a simple email program that sent and recieved mail, and I was working on a simple text browser and http daemon when all of my scripts got erased...grrr... The point is though, scripting in mIRC had it's advantages. It gave me good programming style, gave me a really nice introduction to basic commands for text alterations and if-then-else statements, and since mIRC is an internet app, it helped me to understand IP addresses, sockets, ports, and allowed me to chat and get ideas while writing the scripts. Hope this was helpful.
