Apple users have been preeching this things praises for months. We all thought this is what Steve had in store for us in the new iMac. Oh well, I guess we can't have all the inovations to ourselves...
Has anyone had a look at OSX-VNC yet? It's very much the same idea as what's being discussed here. --AND-- It's Free... Check it out: Http://www.osxvnc.com
It seems to me that you've hit the nail on the head. Why I have a real loyalty to Apple computers, that is. Sure, they do alot of the standard computer manufacturer things you spoke of, which does piss me off pretty often. BUT, every once in a while they do something so terrifically right that I fall in love with them all over again. Examples? -- The G4 tower design (fold down side door), the orchestration of OS X (sure they had to have a new OS, but did it have to be THIS good?), and I mean you really have to admit the new iMac IS really cool lookin.
I have boycotted classic. Not because I *hate* it, but because its the only way I've been able to really test the limits of MOSX. Well, that AND I have 170 days uptime as of today, mostly because of my classic boycott. Classic was the root of every kernel panic I ever encountered (no 'root' pun intended).
That's all true, but I'm still a little burned by the fact that they still haven't produced drivers for my epson 1160 wide format printer. It's really important to the work I do sometimes, so for now I have to export my documents to a win2k machine to print on large format paper such as 11x17. Oh well, maybe someday...
Have these guys gotten the green light from the Berkeley people to use the @home monicker? I'm sure they don't _have_ to, but I just wonder if the Berkeley team has a warm spot in thier heart for these folks, or if it's viewed more as competition for our processor time.
BTW I'm a long time S@H user, which is why this interests me (I have about 2400 units done over the course of the last 25 months).
I use MOSX full time as a server operating system (on a G4/450 - 512mb with 10K rpm HDDs) and I can tell you why I also run linux on boxes beside it. The BSD layer in OSX is full of holes. Holes in the documentation and holes in the implementation. Yes, the GUI beats the pants off anything else in the business of being a UNIX. However for someone who's serving needs are less modest than my own, a complete robust *nix layer is MUCH more important to them than a pretty interface. To many guys, an interface is just a means to an end...
Amen, reverend. This, after I constructed the perfect valentines for her... Homemade breakfast in bed, dozen long stems, cards, candy and a poem. I say, give me a girl who would appreciate that for valentines, or you know... Carmen Electra or something.
Hey, uh, I built my duron system from scratch. Because of this I know something you conveniently forgot to include. That is besides the sound card, case fans, and a few other little things like that... What's the S&H gonna be on that bad boy?
You will be able to, hopefully. This site has a petition and some information on what I'm talking about. Currently Darwin (the "underpinnings" of Mac OS X) is running on x86 hardware, but the pretty UI that really sets MOSX apart is still not opensource, so sign up, and let apple know we want another hardware choice...

Imagine...
Some kiddie printing out some high quality pr0n to my mom's hp 930c back home.
IP printing is indeed the way of the future, we just have to be ready for what the future holds.
