Actually a *lot* of the 65K bug were just theoretical bugs - not something anybody had/(probably)has hit. Just something that when the planets are lined up in correct fashion you have a chance of hitting...
Why is bashing MySQL bad? Bad software is bad software.... is bad software - regardless of where it comes from and how much it costs. Just the fact that said piece of s/w is free (beer or speech take your pick) is no excuse for it being lame.
a software hardware solution that will mantain processor usage at 100%. What I mean is when you look at the proc utilisation on a typical system, it hovers at around 10-20 % most of the time and occasionally in small bursts it goes up to 100%. So in this scenario what'd be ideal is that the s/w throttles the processor speed so that proc utilisation always remains at 100%. As in if the systems not doing too much stuff at any given time slow the proc just enough so that proc utilisation goes up to around 90-100% and once the speed up the proc once utilisation reaches 100% and keep speeding it up until you reach peek speed. Does that make sense? I am thinking you could apply such algorithms to other parts of the system too. i.e. throttle the bus speed the video card etc..
have said how TeX is a much more/imp of a contribution than gnome, I agree w/ all of that and dont need to add any more to that in itself. But let us not forget about all the books and stuff that Knuth has written even w/ out TeX Knuth's contribution to FSF and CS in general is far far greater than what Miguel has done. Please dont take this to mean I dont respect Miguel, I certainly do and highly enjoy the s/w that he is working on. But as someone on/. just said his contri pales in comparison to what Knuth has done. I mean even comparing the two to each other is kind of unfare to both... more so to Knuth though. Any ways I am just rambling on (had a long day) congrats to Miguel and all the folks in the g(e?)nome project;-)
auditing _is_ implemented in nt, so you can audit such events as a user tried/failed to log on access file, delete file, access/delete registry keys etc...
actually AFAIK c2 level security _requires_ that the system should not be connected to a network or have a floppy. of course i could be completely off my rocker and be wrong on this one, so please correct me if you _know_ otherwise:-)
what if the user is standing on two hydraulic platforms(one foot on each platform) feet buckled to the platforms, kinda like skis. and as the user walks a computer regulates the tension in the hydraulic pumps below the platforms to simulate lets say walking up a hill. the platforms could also slope towards a particular direction, so that the user has to lean forward; exactly what you do when you are walking up a hill. the next refinement could be platforms that bend; to simulate small changes in terrain, like putting your foot on a small rock etc..
were corel not doing a word perfect suite for java a couple of yrs ago? i distinctly remember using a beta copy once. or was it some other suite? anyways i am surprised that w/ todays much more powerful pc's and all the advances in java tech that its not being marketed as aggressively as i would like. i mean certainly you have much more people using a platform other than windows than two yrs ago, so i would think the cross platform deal w/ java would be a lot more appealing than a couple of yrs ago.
going on what i would like to know is wether there is any s/w that will pick up the cpu temp +fan speed etc readings from the ABIT motherboards and display them while you are running your os and apps, maybe you will need support from the kernel. But has something like this been done or is it even possible? it had be really nice if you could have s/w monitoring all those readings and turn the computer off or send out admin alerts if the readings reach a user defined critical point. sorta like a UPS.
personally i think red-hat w/ there new found loads and loads of money has lost an oportunity here. i think _they_ should have bought star division and released it under the GPL! think of all the good will they would have gained from the opensource world
CE to replace NT???? You are kidding, right?

most people actually pronounce Linux as "Lienux" which really ticks me off.
