a well encoded mp3 can sound quite good, and i have copied some to tape and played them in my car and they sound at least as good as a tape. Not as good as cd , no, but close enough (especially when many people listen through lame PC speakers). Mp3s arent for hi fi enthusiast, but they do fine for the rest of us. and thats hendrix!
Yes, NSI has been hoping to keep their WhoIs database as some sort of propietary treasure left over from their monopoly days. What i want to knoi, thjough, is there anything to stop ICANN, the group formed to be responsible for IP allocation, from making their own database?
Of ICQ, AIM and AOL 4.0, I would have to say that ICQ is the best, and none the interface was designed by AOL, except for the new things in ICQ 99. I'm not sure, but actually I even think most of ICQ 99 was completed prior to ICQ being purchased by AOL. You can tell they havent completely AOLized ICQ yet because it doesn't force advertising on you as do AIM or any Aol website (netscape.com, aol.com or the ones on their online service).
I wonder what they shall do with their IE browser now that they own Netscape. While i would imagine that they could just pay MS to include them in the Online Services folder without using IE as the basis for their browser, it is important to MS to have AOL using IE because it tips the browser usage percents in MS's favor. Even though the AOL users who are using IE dont necessarily recognize it as the MS product, it still boosts their 'market share' by 20-30%.
I consider WinAmp to be a well worth the $15 i opted to pay them last year. While i have neither recieved nor required support, they did wire me a nice little thank you letter.
The TV ads are definitely not too educational - they tend to show some person spinning around in a fantasy world of flowers or the like and then at the end, the announcer quickly mumbles through side effects. I dont think this sort of marketing could benefit anyone except the pharmaceutical companies. I particularly enjoyed one ad for some drug where at the end they attmepted to say 'may cause nausea, headache and vomiting in some patients' in a way that wasnt too clearly audible. Advertising to doctors seems completely reasonable to me, as you describe. Since it is prescription drugs, however, i dont think the average consumer should be compelled to go to their doctor seeking a specific prescription drug, even worse, a specific brand name of a drug they dont really know whether they need.
I have no doubt Win98 has a lot more overhead than linux, considering how MS bloats the OS with each new release. If Id Software is capable of programming for Unix with the same quality as for Windows, i would say Q3 will be a good way to compare - i'm going to try it eventually myself, on the same machine as you said. I am in the process of deciding what distribution to choose and working on backing up my hard drive before i install linux on this nmachine. My only experience is with Amiga OS, which is um...sort of like Unix, it seems.
I am looking to the day when games are available for Linux! Hopefully, Q3 will lead the way or commercial game companies to begin to release their products for Linux. Now, if Valve Software releases Linux 2/3 life, then we will be all set. I hope game manufacturers recognize the potential to have their games running on systems that dont crash!

Free-amp is an open source mp3 player, and exists for a variety of platforms.
Anyone interested should check it out at www.freeamp.org.
