There were no reports Presley hurt anybody with his gun slinging, but he was known to have a fascination with firearms.
You all know Elvis was American, right?
MiB said he was an alien and went home. And as far as I'm concerned, Tommy Lee generally makes one hell of a lot more sense than pretty much everything else I've seen recently. For instance, go to Wikipedia and plug in "MiB". It takes you to Mebibyte, which just sucks horribly.
We already know what we will do with it. What we've done with "it" throughout history. Use it [to] crush human nature until humans get sick of it and start slaughtering each other. Then we'll use it for decent uses and people will look back and be shocked by our ignorance and brutality.
Now that's a depressing thought, not that I disagree. V-1s and V-2s lead to the Apollo program and got Neill on the Moon.
Just remember, just because you have a bomb, doesn't mean you have to use it. "Withdrawal is the better part of valour" I think is the way the saying goes.
"Cloud" has a slightly [more] abstract hierarchy than a mainframe which makes it more modular and scalable. It is easy for a cloud service to span the globe. A mainframe can't even span past its building.
I've used RS-232 ports to login to mainframes. They don't have to go anywhere. They just have to be accessible.
I think you just proved my point yet again. "Cloud" is not new. People like you are just re-inventing it.
Its been ages since i messed with Linux, but just off the top of my head unzip it and if its program code you use make to compile and install?
Pretty much. "cd/usr/local; tar xzf ~/dwn/blah.tgz ; cd blah ; make ; make install" (or some such). I suspect you could figure it out, given a few minutes.
... its no wonder we are getting our asses kicked by China and India...
Yup. It's amazing we're still in business at all. Those folks are way more hungry (motivated) than we are these days. Over here, anyone who hasn't just given up is thumbing an iBauble.
More time spent on this pointlessness means less time available for their normal job of ruining things. Yeah the USA is "outrageously fucked up",...
Back on topic,... Doesn't such a proposed law suggest that said Congress Critters sat down and played a video game, then were subsequently overcome with intent to commit violent crimes? Doesn't that suggest said Congress Critters ought to turn themselves into the authorities, or get themselves committed, or something?
... asserting that massive IT infrastructure spending is the only thing that will save a business...
That's one of those logical fallacy thingamahooeys you used there, right? What's it called again? False dog? Straw man?
I've worked with outfits that supported thousands of desktop Unix machines (workstations), all maintained by two or three people. Where's all the massive IT infrastructure spending you're talking about? Maybe you meant Microsoft OS and commercial software licencing support costs? What's McAffee cost per desktop these days?
It isn't magic, but things do get spooky when you start hooking together disparate systems (none of them have ANY bugs, right?) and interdependencies.
Spooky? No, they don't get spooky. They may be complex, but sticking complex stuff together trying to get them to talk and play nice together demands testing and verification, that's all. There is no such thing as magic, despite what Space Channel may be saying these days. There is no ghost in that machine.
The truth is as an industry we know less about identifying, controlling and mitigating those risks than we do about in house solutions.
Actually, I think it's more that as an industry, you've lost all of that knowledge and are presently attempting to reinvent it, kind of like porcelain glazes we've forgotten how to recreate. Pretty much all "cloud" stuff is old tech. implemented first decades ago, and IBM's been flogging mainframes intended to run multiple VMs for at least three years that I know of.
I've worked with outfits that rolled out (Solaris pizza box) servers for five grand apiece, started them up, then forgot about them. They're still ticking over a decade or so later.
Both Glenn and I would get so damned frustrated when HR refused to listen and would pass up somebody really good because the software didn't spit them out. didn't matter that they could do nearly any IT job, that they were sharp and had good troubleshooting skills, hard workers, nope all that matters was what the program told them.
I was called in for an interview once. I shook the guy's hand when I got there and he led me to a computer and sat me down at it. "See that file?" It was a gzipped tarball. "What do you do with it?" I was the twentieth guy he'd been through. Nineteen people before me all had "Unix experience" on their resume, yet not one of them knew what to do with a tarball.
Ignorance is bliss. HR people can all die a fiery death (please!) kicking and screaming their lungs out all the way down.
[I remember when "BASIC" was spelled "BASICA.EXE":-)]
ii) Shirts that detect when they're being buttoned up. Ditto for zippers.
Don't forget the costs of vendor lock-in....if the zipper should be unzipped by someone other than yourself the BSA might inform your significant other with threats of extortionate fees.
Jeebus, that's the last thing I wanted to hear today. The BSA following me around all day long, watching my every move, debiting my bank acct. on my every action,...
The problem with book smart, is usually because the person learned how to abuse the education system...
Ah. Now I begin to understand the point. Those people have never scared me, nor have I considered them ever to be a threat. You know something I don't? Great! Teach it to me.
We wouldn't mind you, except you felt the need to point out that you don't play [well] with others and want to be left alone. That generally translates to mean that you're feeling lonely and seeking attention.
Huh. Guilty on all counts. Are you a psychiatrist or a psychologist? Actually no, not really seeking attention; not today at least. I've bigger problems to deal with today. You know that bit in "Forest Gump" when he feels like going for a run? That's me today.
Why the fuck does anyone think anyone will put up with that crap?
Have you watched a TV lately? I find myself *constantly* astonished with life these days. CONSTANTLY! "Holy !@#$, look at that, and that, and that,..."
Damn. The only solace I find these days is in hardcopy books. The people I see around me from day to day are all certifiably insane (or that's what we would have called them last century).
Thank you, and I'll admit my mistake. There's a redundant "and" in what I wrote. It's a fair cop. Mix a (should be) dead language up with a living language, and !@#$ happens.
This latest reviling example is proof-positive that Microsoft has nothing but contempt for individuals, and is nothing more than the government and "big business' " bitch.
On soapbox: This has nothing to do with MS, other than they're following "the crowd."
This's accountants. Give 'em computers, a fast network, a database, and some code to make it all interact robotically, and accountants will believe that a micro-payment economy makes sense. "Look at all the transactions!!!11" Cf. Wall St.
When I was learning this stuff, one of the maxims was, "There are things that computers can do, but shouldn't." Accountants haven't learned that lesson, and may never will.
Off soapbox. As an aside, have I told you people about the accountant I watched with one finger on an Excel column and another hand on a desktop calculator, summing the column? Dumbth/Faceplant.

<moan> ...
The hard part is making the Nietzsche jokes.
There was nothing about Nietzche that was funny. Well, okay, "The Anti-Christ" is pretty much the best send up of Xtianity that I've read so far.

I choose to reject it. Not easy, but it can be done.
I just had a vision of Elvis Presley pulling out a gun and shooting his TV. I assume it was a scene from a movie I once saw.

[Still] 4 [years] until the next leap day :-)
WRT MS, that joke just never gets old.

If you can explain it, that means you know it.
We wouldn't mind you, except you felt the need to point out that you don't play [well] with others and want to be left alone. That generally translates to mean that you're feeling lonely and seeking attention.

If you're fresh out of school with an Information Technology degree, it's going to scare me a little.
What? Are you a manager? Why does this scare you!?! What is threatening about a fresh out of school geek?
Well instead you could write 'and the rest' instead of 'et cetera' etc.
Damn, you people are funny at times. :-)
You folks logged in when you use Google?
I don't use Google.
I log in to my Youtube account ...
I've never logged into youtube. Why do you have to do that? To upload?
I have one video that's seeing 50000 views a week ...
Kudos.
I'll just go and play in the corner over there ... Don't mind me.
And how in the hell can you function without a Google account?
Is that a serious question, or do I get a "whoosh"? I'm missing the point, I think.
"I'm glad I'm not going to live long enough to see that world. The rest of you are welcome to it."
Once they have figured out how to charge artists for composing, it's just a matter of time before they figure out a way to charge you for decomposing.
I like the way you think. You're welcome to use either of my shoulders to lean or cry on for the next five minutes. Clock's ticking.
Gahd.

"etc." means "et cetera". Using "&" before it means you don't know its meaning. Stop using it.
"And et cetera." Bite my shiny metal ass. We are using a dead language, ffs.
