  1. A College Freshman's Look Back on SIIA complains schools don't buy enough software · · Score: 1

My high school boasted constantly about its dedication to technology. There were several Macintosh word processing labs on fairly new machines. There were two upgraded labs my senior year which had p2-233s running NT, Word, and Excel. All the classrooms had their own computer (something that was boasted of often). Several levels of Computer Programming classes existed.

The Application labs were nice. Good machines running the software most people will actually get a chance to use.

The Word Processing labs (the macs) were used frequently. Too bad students couldn't take their work home to keep working on it, unless you were the one student in a hundred who had a Mac at home.

The Programming labs sat back and watched while all the other labs in the school were upgraded. As of several months ago, they were still 8 year old Macs running Think Pascal.

I took four years of programming in high school. I might as well have taken a study hall, except that I would have gotten something useful and productive done in study hall. It's another case of training instead of teaching...the school would rather train students to play the trained ape on software than to free their minds by introducing them to programming.

  2. Nice logo, but too complex on KDE Gets a Mascot · · Score: 1

A good logo should be simple and elegant. While it's a very nice dragon, it doesn't have any oomph.
