I think you need to look at a more simpler concept first. Simple mathamatics is the basis of all computer chips. Math is one thing that we can definatly say that we have in common with any alien anywhere. The other things are physics and chemistry.
Now if the aliens base their computers on math we have a slight chance. If its chemical I wouldn't give us any odds. If it physics based we could maybe figure it out. We all know that they are working with light to make a computer.
Any ways, 1+1 is always 2. Computers started out as calculating machines and have grown from there,
The huge problem comes when the logic system comes into play. Would an alien compare two values and make a decision based on that? how about storing values i.e memory. How complex is their math?
what if they've evolved based on an acoustic model like the bat? they would not even have a monitor?
But then all of the computers now are based on alien tech from roswell....yeah right.
