  1. Developer, in a union here on Should IT Unionize? · · Score: 1

I'm a software developer in a union. The union negotiates with the company to set the engineering levels & benefits.

Standardized benefits i think are very fair. Although it removes the opportunity to negotiate more vacation, etc in lieu of raises, etc.

The union also advocates for employees in cases of workplace grievances.

The union contract defines what benefits we receive, which means the company cannot suddenly decide to remove benefits from us.

The contract also covers layoffs & terminations which provides the employees some benefit.

  2. Cablecard is broken on Vista Media Center Plus CableCard Equals No TV · · Score: 1

In every cable card article i have seen, vista, tivo3, tv's, etc the cable cards never work. The cable companies are intentionally making this a broken technology. Its not vista's fault at all.

  3. Re:Apples And Oranges on PC Photo Printers Challenge Pros · · Score: 1

they make rather nifty machines called lightjets or something that use lasers/led's to "print" your digital picture on real photo paper that is developed/exposed/whatever. Not quite dunking your flash cards in chemicals, but the same photo paper your film prints on, just instead of developing the film and shining light through it, you shine the light digitally onto the same paper.

  6. WinTV-PVR-usb2 on USB TV Tuner Recommendations and Experiences? · · Score: 1

hauppauge WinTV-PVR-usb2 is the only way to go. Its got onboard mpeg2 encoding. I hear its basically identical to the pvr 250 pci model but in a usb2 form factor.

Slightly more expensive than pci, but worth it.

All usb models have to do some video compression, the cheap models do some really crappy compression, the mpeg2 ones are decent.

  7. digital rebel (or nikon d70) on Seeking a Decent Digital SLR Camera for Beginners? · · Score: 4, Informative

I have a rebel. Battery life is awesome, and im pretty sure its just as good as the nikon. Since the sensor is only used when actually taking a picture (no live preview), and the lcd is almost always off, and the battery is large, you get hundreds of shots off a single charge.

large prints - its 6 megapixel. And its very noise free, since the sensor is physically very large. Beats the 8mp point & shoots by a ways.

costs a bunch tho, because youll probably want a longer zoom fairly quickly, and a large CF card (1gb or 512mb), and possibly a flash and tripod. Id budget an extra 500 to 1000$ over a rebel or d70 kit. If you go for a canon 10D you need to budget more, because it doesnt come with a lens, and theres no cheap equiv to the rebel kit lens for canon. (to get the wideangle, after the sensor crop / multipplier).

the sensor crop / multiplier is great if you want tele, but sucky for wide. Since you need extra wide lenses. its 1.6x for canon (18mm lens ~= 28mm lens). i think its similar for nikon.

    At my alma mater www.stevens.edu,
there is an optional (~30% of kids do it) co-op program that can pay for a lot of your education. You basically alternate school-work-school-work, etc for the middle couple of years. winds up being 5 years. No summer vacations though.

They also offer some decent academic scholarships, or did when i went there.

Its got some nice science & engineering programs. As well as close proximity to some great bars in hoboken and manhattan.

  10. Meridian Color GPS Traveler Value Pack on Recommended GPS Receivers? · · Score: 1

Magellan has some new "Traveler" kits out recently. They bundle various meridians with a memory card, mount, routing software, etc.

Amazon had the color traveler kit for about 450$ when i looked a couple weeks ago. Theres also a gold traveler kit (non-color lcd) thats cheaper.

That would be the route i would go if you want to do any vehicle navigation.

  11. 17W extra for my p3 on The Cost of Distributed Client Computing? · · Score: 2, Interesting

My apc backups rs reports how much power is being used. When im at 100% cpu vs ~0% its an extra 17 watts.

For a 19" monitor + p3 + hard drives etc, its only about 220W total from the ups. (im sure much more peak from a cold start).

  12. re: lcd/backlights going bad on Extending LCD Display Life? · · Score: 1

The laptop i use is a couple years old (cel300 i think) and if the screen has been off for a few minutes it takes several minutes for the backlight to come back up to normal brightness. its fairly dim right after the screen comes on.
By the time a current laptop would suffer such a fate they'll probably have OLED's and such. Hopefully current lcd/backlights are improved over the older ones.
