I don't know how many times I've heard this argument. I remember when Word Perfect was the standard. And there were others before that.
No matter how much it may seem that.doc is the standard, (and it may very well be at this time), it will lose it's glory. And other formats will go on to replace it.
I've got an old 386 laptop... about the same as yours. If you do get it working, I'd be interested as to how you do so.
I've got Debian running on this comp, and I just put SlackWare on my laptop (just playing around).
I'll have to 'fess that I was thinking along the same lines, Debian on a floppy. I don't know anything about faking a PPP connection via COM1... I'll have to look that up, it may be the extra info I was needing to know.

The apartment has a shared kitchen/living room and four separate bedrooms (each bedroom has a full bath in it).
Rent's not terribly bad (from what I've heard from friends, and considering I live in the middle of Hick-NoWhere). It's $265/mo, you get a 12 month lease. Internet's only about $24 a month (about $10 more than I was paying for dial-up a few months back). And the cable tv's thrown in w/ the deal...
It's kind of a college-apartment place.
