What we do is create tools like a word processor that lets people express their ideas and we're not at all involved in how they choose to use it. -B.Gates
Oh yes? The problem with that is that many people probably can't read it. See? That's fascism.
ESR is one of the most promonent Linux advocates. When he is promoting Open Source he actually means Linux. You have to use a filter when you listen to ESR; or ignore him. I have to say it was rather disappoing to find out that he had a rather hostile attitude towards other Open Source projects. So remember when ESR say Open Source he means Linux.
The majority of FreeBSD developers is between 25-30. The majority of the FreeBSD core team members is in their thirties.
I guess they are old if you are 17.
Linux is a truely open develop model that does not discriminate based on popularity contests or worthless peices of paper. It is not about who your sponsor is or what friends you have on the inside or who owes you favors. It's about technical merit.
Is that why Linus hasn't fixed the VM system yet??
FreeBSD doesn't have any decent clustering support.;-)
Yeah, and Yahoo is a single machine. He, he. Of course you can do clustering on FreeBSD. As the above poster said, it hasn't been any great interest in it but I know there are some projects. None as high profile as the Beowulf thou.
FreeBSD has been focusing on trying to get best possible performance on the most commonly used platform. That's been x86 up to now. So that you can run a high traffic porn site like persian kitty, a buisy ftp server like cdrom.com, big web servicing like yahoo or a unix workstation like mine on "lousy hardware". What will be the most common platform in the future I don't know, but FreeBSD will be there. There are also a Alpha port for FreeBSD but it is "alpha".
Now that there are a lot of attention towards Linux and the money are pouring in from the big guys, it is sad that some linux users are bashing BSD when they are getting good press.
As the other poster I have alos been quite satisfied whith WC and I regulary use them. If you and your brother think that downloading from ftp.kernel.org or any other servers suites your needs better, more power to you.
It's just the usual FUD from the kids here on Slashdot everytime a *BSD story/news is posted. Sad really but what do you expect from a Linux advocacy site like Slashdot. FreeBSD is in fact growing and using the download stats and CDROM sales, the userbase is growing tremendously. I also think that it isn't just about apples and oranges;)
