Gates came across as 'nice' but self-obsessed. He gladly accepted all credit for creating the internet, and was happy to talk for the whole computer industry - rather than just Micro$oft.
Paxman really chickened out of the meaty stuff - he almost seemed 'awe-inspired' by Bill - like he'd never spoken to anyone important before. He was definitely put-off by the fact that he was talking to the richest man in the world. Now if he'd been a politician...
Only Paxman mentioned Dr Linus, Bill didn't mention Linux once, in fact, he talked endlessly about Microsoft having loads of competition - but he couldn't name any contenders.
Most of the interview was about Bill being a 'visionary' from birth to current day. They ended the interview talking about where Microsoft would take the world of computers in the future.
From the trailers that the Beeb has been running of this so far (and they're pushing it quite a bit) the main focus seems to be more about him being the Richest Man In The World and his role as a 'visionary' (okay, I know) in the computing industry.
There is almost definitely going to be approx. 20% DOJ case questions and some kinda 'monopoly' focus by Paxman.
Reality check here: I expect *VERY LITTLE* mention of Linux as a serious threat - instead it will most likely be lumped in with 'the competition' when mentioned by Paxman.
The Beeb are going to keep this interview very mainstream, unlike Channel 4 (also terrestrial) which prefers to honor the special interest groups better (e.g. 'Triumph of the Nerds', etc).
Nonetheless I still hope the Linux questions will be fired at him, and Jeremy Paxman won't make these questions easy - if they come. A transcript of the interview would be nice - the BBC website may post this afterwards - their website content is usually quite good.
How do you feel about your key character role in After-Y2K? Do you think that all the 'geeky' comics, big cuddly penguins and anti-Micro$oft stuff serves to further The Cause, or do you think it could work against us in the long-term, closing off geek communities (and Linux) from the rest of the world?
Cool. Finally a search engine that lists our site at the top of the list, and I haven't even 'submitted' it yet!
Previous search engines find a mention on the Gnome main page and list it about 13th, and then our site appears around 43rd if at all!
Sounds stupid, but you'd think if you typed in 'screem' it should be able to find 'screem.org' somewhere near the top. Google did it first time. Sooooo cool!
In that case it would be a sequel to Java - 'Palava', perhaps;-)
Wouldn't it be funny if they spent so long underground developing this amazing product to change the world, and then when they finally come up to release it, they find someone's already done it?
Seems to be a very cheap and simple advertising campaign - steal someone elses ad, and make a (not very funny) parody of it.
Come on, there's got to be a million and one ways of advertising something as exciting as a real alternative to Windows - I can think of a few original ideas myself - and they don't have to include the word 'Microsoft'.
I'm currently working on a project called SCREEM - Site Creating & Editing EnvironMent - for Gnome/Linux. At the moment there's just an alpha version of the source available, but we should have a new website and beta release available soon. Probably doesn't have all the features you want, but see what you think... http://www.idaho2.demon.co.uk
I saw this interview too. It was deadly boring.

From my own personal experience, if they're trying out Civ first, they won't get onto trying out anything else.

The web - it's a wonder it would work!

Summary: they're loving this hype!
Notice it? It jumped out of the page!
;-)
Seems that they don't like it when it happens to them, but it's always good company policy whenever there's any competition around
