Actually, closed source software is better. If there's a vulnerability in open source software, anyone can look a the source code, find the security holes, and then exploit them. Closed source software is definitely far more secure.
Well, that's the cloud for you. Stop connecting stuff that doesn't need to be connected.
The best firewall- route to null
Hey, don't blame the cloud. I'll state on record that I store my passwords in the cloud. I have a KeePassX database that syncs via ownCloud. But decrypting the database requires both my master password, and a key file that I only store locally. So even if the ownCloud server's breached, my data is not in danger. (As an extra precaution, I also encrypt everything before I put it in my cloud folder, but that's just paranoia.)
The problem again is LastPass. Nobody knows if their security practices are any good, and the attack surface is huge.
Remembering passwords is terrible security practice. It leads to password reuse, very weak passwords, written down passwords, forgetting to change your passwords at least yearly, etc.
Using a password manager is ideal. The problem is using LastPass specifically is dumb; it's proprietary and closed source, so nobody has any idea what's going on with those passwords, nor if the company behind it is using optimal security practices. It plugs into your browser, so the attack surface is basically your entire computer.
Use a FOSS password manager that store your passwords locally (i.e. does not connect to the Internet) and through an encrypted hash, like KeePass. LastPass is a bad idea on a number of levels.
Perhaps you missed the part where Motorola advertised the phone as one that will receive updates and not get left behind.
You missed the part where people shouldn't believe everything they read or are told. Lack of updates has been an android issue from day one, so I'm not going to believe any outfit that promises them on Android.
One might get the idea that part of those "overpriced" Apple phones is getting updates, and if you want a razor thin margin like the more "sensibly priced" android phones, maybe they can't afford to update you every month.
So I shouldn't be mad at Lenovo, because even though they are guilty of blatantly false advertising, I shouldn't've believed it in the first place?
Read the Halloween Documents to see how Microsoft killed my Pappy!
That shit was 18 years ago now, give it a rest. Hanlon's Razor applies here as always: never attribute to malice what can be explained by incompetence. If Steam games are starting to have issues on WIn10, it seems far more likely that MS can't find its ass with both hands these days, than that it has some nefarious master scheme.
If corpses with slit throats start appearing on the streets the day after an infamous knife murderer is released from prison, you should assume all those people just were too incompetent to keep their throats safe.
"but once again we've heard Nintendo is not chasing graphical parity".
Which means it won't reach library parity, and you'll see games on Xbox One and PS4 but not NX, like the current situation with WiiU.
Nintendo cannot survive on first party alone.
Really? That's funny. They seem to be doing pretty well. I bet you think Apple should also sell macOS separately for any x86 computer, right?
How is this any different than for any other manufacturer? You're up shit's creek if you think any of the big manufacturers are sending timely OTA security updates.
iPhones and Nexus phones both get timely updates. I think the Galaxy S phones do as well since Samsung has been pushing them for government use, although I don't own one and so I can't tell you for sure.
Sorry, forgot to respond to this. Maybe you should check your link to see what it actually says: "2015 Moto E with 4G LTE in Latin America, Canada, Europe and Asia (2nd Gen)"
I'm an American, so no update for me. But that's alright. I switched to a Nexus and I'm loving the monthly security updates. I don't recommend anything but iPhones and Nexus phones anymore. And I ESPECIALLY recommend against everything Lenovo and Motorola.
Then you stopped providing updates for it (of ANY kind) after 219 days.
What are you missing? That shiny new software smell? If you want great support and timely updates, maybe you should look at spending more than $99 for a smart phone. The E is clearly a low end device. Don't expect Apple support.
Perhaps you missed the part where Motorola advertised the phone as one that will receive updates and not get left behind.
Anybody remember the Dreamcast? The memory cards for the games had a screen and went into the controller; they served as a second interface in some respects. But you could also remove the memory card and play some minigames on it like a tiny console.
You specifically advertised the 2015 Moto E with the following line: "And while other smartphones in this category don't always support upgrades, we won't forget about you, and we'll make sure your Moto E stays up to date after you buy it."
Then you stopped providing updates for it (of ANY kind) after 219 days.
Fuck you, fuck you so hard. I've made it very clear to everybody I know that they should never, under any circumstances, buy any Motorola or Lenovo products.
The only reason they have a monopoly on gaming is because other platforms need to show up and compete, if game support on Linux was up to snuff I wouldn't run Windows at home outside a VM
That's true, but it's a chicken-or-the-egg problem. Developers and AMD/Intel/NVIDIA don't support Linux as well as Windows because few people use Linux for gaming, and there are few Linux gamers because Windows support is better for most games.
If we want to live in a world that's not locked down by Microsoft, we need to collectively make some sacrifices and buy Linux games now, while the support's not quite as good. That's the only way it'll get better.
I love some M$ hate as much as the next person but I have noticed zero issues with Steam on Windows 10 and have seen no evidence whatsoever of Microsoft making a move to lock down the platform. In fact if anything they keep opening it up. I mean for fucks sakes they just allowed the use of linux binaries, that is hardly the move of a company on track to restrict what software can be installed.
How is giving support for Linux binaries proof that they're not trying to clamp down on their competitors?
How will Microsoft pull this off? Steam downloads and installs applications. Is MS going to make downloading things outside of the Win Store difficult? Make installing applications difficult? I don't see either of things things flying with anyone who sells software meant to run on windows.
Read the Halloween Documents to see how Microsoft operates. For example, a program competing with Microsoft's will have lots of nonsensical pop-up errors, so the user will be wont to switch to Microsoft's. In Windows 10, the OS will automatically uninstall Chrome or Firefox and switch the default browser to Edge instead based off of a "detected incompatibility". Things like that.
Isn't life grand, when you rent your computer from Microsoft rather than owning and controlling it?
Why? Is he leasing a Surface tablet? How did manage this arrangement where Microsoft owns his hardware?
Windows 10 is programmed to essentially take control from the user in whatever way possible, usually through deception (i.e. deleting Chrome and switching Edge to the default browser because of a "detected incompatibility").
You might own the hardware, but Windows 10 does not let you use it like it is yours.
Microsoft's legal department has orders of magnitude more funding and personnel than the entire company of Epic Games. A lawsuit wouldn't be very wise from a business perspective. We should be thankful they're being brave enough to at the very least call out MSFT's behavior.
Yet another example of Microsoft active in an abusive, monopolistic fashion.
If you want PC gaming to survive, make sure you only buy games that have Linux/macOS support. As the alternatives' market share increases, NVIDIA, Intel and AMD will be compelled to spend more money on their hardware support for non-Windows OSs, and game developers will be wont to make their ports better.
"Fingerprints, in contrast, have traditionally been viewed as 'real or physical evidence,'"
I wonder it these judges would also consider the practice of strapping a male baby to a board and cutting off part of it's penis without anesthesia to be acceptable because it is "tradition"
I can think of many other "traditions" that need to be reconsidered in light of modern times.
Cortana only logs what is necessary to do her job.
You sound pretty confident of that (even though the source is closed so unless you're the one who wrote Cortana you would have no idea). Perhaps then you can explain why opening Notepad will result in Windows 10 contacting 107 different domains, including watson.live.com and m.adnxs.com?
This is Slashdot.. The best and "only" new feature is BASH.. Who cares about the rest...
In all seriousness, please tell me what good BASH is if you don't have the rest of the Unix/Linux underpinnings, like OS X/macOS does, to make it all work?
This. The reason they designed PowerShell in the first place is because all of the binary registries and what not in Windows can't be processed through the classic Unix tools. Putting bash directly into the OS doesn't seem to be very useful.
Not at all. I don't do anything illegal that I am aware of. I just don't want hackers having all my passwords, and infosec is a hobby of mine.
Actually, closed source software is better. If there's a vulnerability in open source software, anyone can look a the source code, find the security holes, and then exploit them. Closed source software is definitely far more secure.
... in other words, security by obscurity. That's not a discredited practice or anything.
Well, that's the cloud for you. Stop connecting stuff that doesn't need to be connected. The best firewall- route to null

What kind of victim-blaming shit logic is that?

Anyone who wants decent mobile gaming has already got a choice of dozens of devices that also do more than just play games.
Android and iOS games are almost universally terrible. The 3DS is the only current portable console worth owning.
Anybody remember the Dreamcast? The memory cards for the games had a screen and went into the controller; they served as a second interface in some respects. But you could also remove the memory card and play some minigames on it like a tiny console.

Can you take your antisemitism elsewhere, please?
svchost is an integral process in Windows NT. Check if it's in C:\Windows\System32. If not, it's malware disguised as svchost.
Windows: systemd free since the beginning.
But it has Windows SCM, which does generally the same things as systemd does. So why do you bring it up?

Since phones are tools that need to be usable during emergencies, it makes sense that you can take photos and what not without unlocking the phone.
I really, really don't see the point in any of this for Windows, even if you have a tablet.
This is Slashdot.. The best and "only" new feature is BASH.. Who cares about the rest...
